£2171 DAMAGES
JURY'S AWARD FOR BOY
SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT Damages amounting to £2171 were awarded by a jury yesterday to the father of a little boy who lost his foot as a result of a motor accident. Plaintiff was Robert Cameron Twenty man (Mr. Goldstino and Mr. Fortune), whose son, Stuart, then aged five, was the victim of an accident at the Helensville overhead bridge on December 30, 1940. Defendant was Norman Owen (Mr. North and Mr. Wallace), the driver of a motor-car and trailer that struck the hoy. Damages totalling £006"2 were claimed. The case came before Mr. Justice Fair.
After an absence of 3} hours the jury returned to award £1(300 general damages, £SOO for the cost of artificial limbs and £l7l special damages. Mr. Goldstino moved for judgment. Mr. North was granted 14 days in which to consider whethec he would move for a new trial or for judgment. DEATH OF A BOY An inquest into the death of a youth, Thomas Richard Shove, aged 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Shove, ol Wood Street, Papakura, whoso body was found in a creek at Papakura on Friday, January 28, was held before the coroner, Mr. C. K. Lawrie, at Papakura yesterday. Evidence was given that deceased's body was found in a mud pool in a stagnant creek adjacent to Queen Street. The bead and shoulders were immersed in from 2ft. to 3ft. of mud.
Dr. 0. C. Jenkins, of Mauurewa. stated that death was caused by suffocation following an epileptic seizure. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, adding that the creek appeared to be in a bad state, which, lie considered, was a matter for the Papakura Borough Council.
