HARBOUR POLLUTION
COMPLAINT AT ONEHUNGA Reference to the discolouration of the sea in the vicinity of Onehuilga Wharf on a recent Saturday, apparently caused by pollution in the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour, was made at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. It was suggested that on such occasions the hoard might send an inspector to see whether there was any possibility of an improvment. ... "The position is bad and will not bo better until the institution of a comprehensive metropolitan drainage scheme," said the superintendent, Mr. D Holdornoss. The pollution came from the reaches of the harbour near West field, he said, and on such occasions. when complaint was made, he usually reported the matter to the Health Department, whose province it was, and they would send out inspectors'. It was'almost impossible to discover the identity of the offender. "The main lesson," Mr. Holderness concluded, "is that the board must continue to urge the prosecution of the metropolitan drainage scheme. Until then there will continue to be trouble with the outlall in the Manukau Harbour generally.."
