MAORI FAMILY'S RECORD

The reported death in actioij of Private Rongo Peta draws attention to the excellent record of the family of Mr. W. Peta, of Te Kaha. Five sons have served either with the 28th Maori Battalion or with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. They belong to the Whanau-Apanui tribe, which has sent a very large proportion of its young men to the present war, and come from a small maize-growing district, most of it settled by Maori Farmers, that prides itself upon having had every one of its fit youths and men in one or other of the overseas or home defence forces.

Reported killed in action, Corporal L. R, Thode was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. F. Thode, of 24 West End Road, Heme Bay. Corporal Thode was particularly well known among scouts, having been instrumental in forming the Calliope Sea Scouts, of which he was master when he enlisted. Corporal Thode was educated at the Bayfield and Richmond Schools and Seddon Memorial Technical College. He was aged 40 and left New Zealand with a reinforcement draft for the Second New Zealand sion. Fie had previously volunteered for service with tlie Navy.

LTETTTEXANT LINDSAY KILLED The death in action of_ Lieutenant L. P. Lindsay, a former New Zealand swimming champion and a New Zealand representative at the Olympic Games m 1928. has been" announced. Lieutenant Lindsay, who was 37 years of age, was educated at the Timaru Boys' High School and during his secondary school career he achieved considerable success a* a swimmer, runner and boxer. He entered the teaching profession and held positions at the Cathedral Grammar School. Christchurch. and the Dilworth School, Auckland. He took his Master of Arts degree in 1936. On the outbreak war Lieutenant Lindsay was a teacher at the Dannevirke High School. After three years' home service in the Army lie went overseas, joining the Mid dip East forces. In 1924 Lieutenant Lindsay won wie New Zealand intermediate . 220 yards free-style swimming championship at Wanganui In each of the 1927-28-32-33-34 seasons he won New Zealand championships over the 220 yards, 440 yards. 880 vards and one mile distances. In 1928 he "was selected as a member of the New Zealand team which competed a t the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. an d, although lie was unsuccessful in the Olympic events, he won the English ?ne mile championship and was second >ll the 800 metres at Tailteann Games in Dublin.
