Turner, W. E. B. (Flt.-Sgt.)—Napier. SERIOUSLY INJURED grown, J. L. —Gisborne. SERVICE LOSSES AUCKLAND SOLDIERS OFFICERS AND SERGEANTS Reported killed in action, Major lan 31. Thomson was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Thomson, of 10 Paica Avenue, Dominion Road. Major Thornton enlisted at the beginning of the war, was commissioned later, and served for some time with a Pacific garrison force before leaving for the Middle East with an early reinforcement draft. then posted to another battalion and eerred throughout the advance into Tunisia. Major Thomson was educated at the Mount Albert Grammar School, and before enlisting was employed at Taumarunui as an accountant. He was a well-known amateur athlete

Second-Lieutenant Lu Paul, also reported killed in action, enlisted as a private, and was appointed to a commission and posted to the 28th Maori Battalion after a period of service in New Zealand. He was a well-known einger and radio announcer. He is survived bv a wife and two children.

Second-Lieutenant J. H. Pile, who las been listed as having died of vounds. was well known in Rugby circles~in Auckland. He first came into prominence in the Bay of Plenty district, and later was outstanding as halfback for the Auckland Training College senior fifteen. His versatile play won lire his representative cap, and he played for Auckland in 1938 and 1939. After an absence from Auckland, he made a reappearance at Eden Park in 1942 as halfback for Army teams. He left for overseas toward the end of the 1942 season.

Reported killed in action, Sergeant A. R. Wilson, New Zealand Permanent Staff, was the elder son of Mrs. G. H. Wilson and the late Mr. C. R- Wilson, of 4 Spencer Street, Remuera. He enlisted in the Army' at the outbreak of and was later commissioned and appointed to staff duties at the Army Scnool of Instruction. He was retained in New Zealand during the emergency period, and then relinquished his commission to enter the Expeditionary Force. Sergeant Wilson was educated at- the Remuera school and Auckland Grammar School, and was a member of the College Rifles football team. He was aged 22.

Sergeant Mervyn Jack Jams, reported killed in action, was the second |on of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Jarvis, of 27 ■Moa Road. Point Chevalier. Serjeant Jarvis had special training in before he went to the Middle East. He was wounded daring the Eighth Army's advance to Tunisia. £eant Jarvis was a former pupil of the Seddon Memorial Technical College. lieutenant C. S. Passmore, who has "Gen reported wounded, was a prominent Rugby player and athlete in Auckland prior to his departure overseas with the First Echelon. He was a Member of the Auckland Grammar School first fifteen, and later played for the Grafton senior team, in which he earned recognition as a hooker and Sccurate place-kick. He played on several occasions for the Tank Brigade team last season. Lieutenant Passmore also keen on surf work, and as an amateur wrestler gained favour with crowds at the Auckland Town Hall. After seeing several months of sfctive service in the Middle East, he returned Jo New Zealand as an instructor in the Tank Corps.
