SHIPYARD FATALITY
CAUGHT IN MACHINERY MR. E. C. BAILEY'S DEATH A well-known Auckland boatbuilder was killed in an accident at the shipyards of Charles Bailey and Son, Limited. in Beaumont Street. Freeman's Bay, yesterday. He was Mr. Ernest Charles Bailey, married, aged 60, of 59 Empire Road, Epsom. The accident occurred at 12.45 p.m., when Mr. Bailey was working a winch used for hauling; cradles on the slipways. His left leg Avas caught in the machinery, and he died shortly after being extricated. _ , . An inquest will be opened this morning. The late Mr. Bailey was a grandson of the founder of the firm of Charles Bailev and Son, while his father is the present principal. He was born in Auckland and had been a boatbuilder ever since he left school. In his younger days, he was a keen yachting and rowing enthusiast, being one of the finest strokes -to have represented the North Shore Rowing Club. He also played Rugby League football with the North Shore Albions. Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife and three sons. Another son lost his life while on service with the Royal New Zealand Navy.
