GIFT TO NEW ZEALAND SHIP GRATEFUL PEOPLE OF FIJI (0.C.) ~ SUVA, Nov. 23 In order to mark the appreciation of the people of Fiji of the service given by a New Zealand steamer which trades to the islands, a suggestion waj made that a Christmas gift be given to every member of the crew. A list was opened, and within a week or so the sum of £617 was collected. The,-; organisers asked particularly that no large amounts should be given, as the intention was that as many people as possible should be associated with the gifts. J , Part of the money is to be used for purchasing a plaque, upon which will be an inscription recording the peoples' •: appreciation of the splendid service ' given by this vessel. It is hoped that the plaque will be placed in some prominent position in the ship. After providing for the plaque, approximately £8 10s will be available for each mem. ber of the vessel's company. The presentation of the cheque was made recently by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Philip Mitchell, K.C.M.G., who referred to the "regular service given by a gallant ship,'' He said the fact that he had travelled in the vessel himself gave him special pleasure in presenting the cheque on behalf of the people of Fiji. The master thanked the people who had sub-. scribed, and also paid a tribute to the service given by the ship's personnel. The ceremony was attended by a representative gathering of the public and by officers and members of the crew. OBITUARY MR. A. J.
