MARSHALLS RAID
CARRIER TASK FORCE SOFTENING-UP ACTION •SUBMARINE SUCCESSES (Reed. 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 A strong carrier task force attacked the Marshall Islands on Saturday. There is no immediate indication whether the action was an isolated raid or a drive into another Japanese stronghold; However, says the Associated Press, the reference to a task force might mean that it was a softening-up action, and that no landings so far have been undertaken. Informed circles at Pearl Harbour believe the attack was on. a major scale, and an implicit warning to Japan that the Gilberts were only the first step in Admiral Nimitz's new offensive.
A Navy communique says that United States submarines have reported the sinking of 11 enemy vessels in operations in the Pacific and the Far East. One large tanker, nine medium-sized freighters, and one small freighter were all sunk. These actions have not previously been announced.
