MESSAGE FROM R.S.A. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday The Dominion president of the New Zealand Returned Services Association, Mr. B. J. Jacobs, has sent the following cablegram to Brigadier J. Hargest, D.S.O. and bar, M.C., on the occasion of his arrival in London: "Your comrades of the New Zealand Returned Services Association have learned with gratification of your complete freedom and extend congratulations on your achievements. Best wishes for your future health and welfare and a speedy reunion with your loving family. All the best for Christmas." FIRST BIRTHDAY AMERICAN SERVICE CLUB The American Bed Cross Service Club in Auckland celebrated its first birthday yesterday with a party in the evening for volunteers who have given . a total of 200 hours' work. Men of the armed forces served the volunteers at the banquet table. A musical programme was given afterwards. Mr. Herbert Lass, club director, introduced Miss Hannh More Fraser, supervisor of the South and South-ivest Pacific area, who helped with the opening of the club last December. Miss C. Ryan, supervisor of the South Pacific area, told the guests that when she had accompanied Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt on her tour through New Zealand. Mrs. Roosevelt had been amazed ana delighted at the work of the volunteers. Thanking the women present on behalf of the mothers, wives and sweethearts of the American boys who Jiave visited the club, Miss Leota Kelly, supervisor of clubs in New Zealand, said she was very pleased to watch the club develop so greatly through the efforts of wohion who had other jobs and more strenuous home duties. While running the voice recording machine by which servicemen send messages to their homes, Mr. Lass heard the greatest tribute to the volunteers first year. One serviceman said: "Gee, mom, these are the friendliest people in the world." Bed Cross Service brooches were presented to 59 volunteers who have served 200 hours in the past year.
