BOWLING OPENINGS

CENTRE TEAM AT REMUERA More bowling clubs in the city and suburbs held their official ooening ceremonies on Saturday afternoon. Showers of rain interrupted play. Remuera Club.—Mr. W. Wallace, president, welcomed the visitors, who included Mr. A. St. J. Dignan, president of the Auckland centre, and Mr. R. M. Algie, newlyelected member of Parliament for the district. The first jack and bowl were played by Mrs. Wallace. A team representing the Auckland centre, and comprising S. Coldicutt. A EL Whitten, W. W. King and A. St. J Dignan, played a drawn game with a Remuera club combination, consisting of E. D Reid, E. Hickson, R. Sheath and G. Fisher. Balmoral Club.—Among the large attendance were Messrs. R. J. Mills. Mayor of Mount Eden. M. J. Walsh and W. M. Mat-he-son, representing the Auckland centre, and H. Kilner, of the Christchurch centre. The visitors were welcomed by the president, Mr W. L. Rowland, whose young son sent down the first jack. Messrs. Layland and Blair, foundation members, played the first bowls Devonport Club. — Mr R. G. May, Mayor of Devonport, I. J. Sutherland, representing the Auckland centre, and J. Biscoe, a pastpresident, were among the record crowd at the opening. After Mr H. J. Richards, the president, had addressed the gathering, Mrs. Richards played the first jack and Mr. H. Pitts, the oldest, member present, the first bowl.

Avondale Club.—The president, Mr. H. Tomlinson, extended a welcome to members and visitors and his wife played the first jack The club last year won the Western Suburbs Association's pennant and this was presented at Saturday's ceremony. Edendale Club.—Fourteen teams took part in a tournament on Saturday, the former being limited to seven heads. Estrigge, Norberg, Magill and Brownet.t were successful with 3 wins Other scores were:—W. LEAGUE FOOTBALL MANUKAU BEATS BLACKBALL A brilliant exhibition of league football was witnessed by the largest crowd of the season—the attendance being estimated at 17,000 —at C'arlaw Park on Saturday when Manukau defeated Blackball, by 23 points to 9, after the West Coast team had had decidedly the better of 60 minntea' play. It was only in the last 20 minutes that Manukau, by reason of its being the heavier team, wore the South Island champions down. The visitors gave a high-class display .of the finer points of the game and their varied passing bouts thrilled the crowd. These tactics however, were n little overdone, and a judicious kick on occasions would have been an advantage. Throughout the game the ball was kicked only six times by the Blackball backs. Manukau won the ball from almost every scrum and at times the backs showed fine combination. Manukau led at half-time by 5 points to 4 Soon after resuming, the visitors' backs rose to the occasion, and from a fast passing bout, in which six players handled. C. Mountford scored a great try, which was converted, and Blackball led by 9 points to 5. Blackball held the lead for about, 12 minutes, but the heavy Manukau pack gradually gained the advantage, and tries came quickly There was no better back on the ground than the Blackball captain, C. Mountford, whose positional play was impressive. Nuttall, fullback, also played a splendid game. Ririnui, Shilton, Watene and Rogers, in the forwards, areatly assisted in the success of Manukau. Taumata, on the wing, and Hemi and Murray, five-eighths, revealed their best form. Hemi's goal-kicking was splendid. Tries for Manukau were scored by Murray (2), Butler, Taumata and Hemi. Hemi converted three and kicked a field, goal. C. Mountford scored for Blackball, Xuttall converting and also kicking two penalty goals. Phelan Shield Final.—-This match was played at Carlaw Park No. 2 on Saturday afternoon, between Mount Albert and Otahuhu. the former winning by 12 points to 11. Caples arid Clement scored for Mount Albert, Cranch converting both tries and kicking a penalty goal. Willen scored for Otahuhu, Riley converting and kicking three penalty goals. INTER-SCHOOLS' SPORTS The fourth annual inter-secondary schools' relay championships were held at King's College on Saturday under wet and slippery conditions, which necessitated the abandonment of the hurdling and broad jumping events. Seven schools were represented and competition was keen. In the open grade the result was close, only one point separating King's College and Auckland Grammar School. Following were the points results:—Open grade: King's College, 41; Auckland Grammar, 40; Mount Albert Grammar, '22. NOTED PLAYER'S REQUEST A cable message from New York states that Joe Kirk wood, the noted golfer, eaid he would ask the Washington Intelligence Board of Inquiry for a hearing to determine if he is being' investigated as an enemy agent. Kirkwood told the United Press Association that the Navy investigators had questioned other golf professionals and friends about, ■him for two months, but had not approached him United Press added that Kirkwood had twice paid lengthy visits to Japan on a tour with other golfers.
