LOSS FOE AUCKLAND MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON (p A ) . WELLINGTON. Sunday Wellington beat Auckland by 10 points to 6 in a return Rugby match yesterday. It was played in atrocious weather and the ground at Athletic Park was a quagmire. It was n case of leave the ball on the ground and kick hard, in which tactics Wellington excelled.

With a strong southerly behind them the Wellington men had the advantage in the, first spell, and only the sound defence of the fullback, Littlejohn, and the halfback, Tetzlaff, prevented more tries by the home side. Bligh and Breed scored for Wellington in this spell. Webster converting both. Waldegravc scored an unconverted try for Auckland. Wellington's fine forward play prevented Auckland taking- full advantage of the wind in the second spell, the only score being an unconverted tr.v by Smith. Wellington's fullback, Webster, played an outstanding game. Myers Cup Match.—The annual Rugby match for the Myers Cup, between teams representing the Otahuhu 'and Hutt Railway Workshops, was played in Wellingt-on on Saturday and resulted in a win for Otahuhu b.v e points to 0.

ANOTHER MANUKAU SUCCESS

In a splendid wet-weather League game Manukau defeated City by 12 points to 9 at ( arlaw P;irk on Saturday afternoon in the champion of champions fixture. Manukau has thus won the triple honours, the senior championship. Roope Rooster and the William Storniont Memorial Shield. There was an element of luck in the victory, as Citv scored three trie.-*, against two. A brilliant try by J. Hemi, who also kicked three goals, was a feature of the game. City led to within a few minutes of the final bell and had a decided territorial advantage. There was a fair attendance, in spHe of heavy showers. The first spell was evenly contested, and no score resulted. Early in the second spell Manukau gained seven points and victory looked certain. However, the City forward rose to the occasion and completely dominated the play, to score three tries in quick succession. With four minutvs to go, the Manukau backs raced 40yds, and Tanmata on the wing in passed to Hemi, who brilliantly cutpast Salaia, and swept on to beat Clarke badly, and score the winning try. Manukau was lucky to be awarded the try scored by Rogers, as the ball appeared to be knocked forward in the in-goal area by Tanmata. who failed to touch down first. A feature of the game was the fine play of the City forwards, with Jackson outstanding. Among the Manukau forwards, Ririnui. Watene and Rogers played splendidly. Shilton, the back row forward, was given a lot, of latitude as regards offside play. Martin played a fine game at fullback, while Taumata and Butler were also prominent on the wings. Tries for Manukau were scored by Rogers and Hemi, the latter converting both and kicking a penalty goal. For City. Hutchinson, Salaia and Mataira scored tries.

SCHOOL BOXING KING'S COLLEGE CHAMPIONS Some excellent bouts were staged when the finals of ttie King's College boxing championships were conducted in the school gymnasium on Saturday evening. A high standard of boxing was witnessed by a good attendance of parents and friends. The school championship was won by R. T. Hellaby, who defeated G. L. Haslett in an even contest. The headmaster. Mr. H. B. Lusk, expressed his thanks to the officials of the Auckland Boxing Association for their assistance. The referee was Mr. N. McLean, and the judges Messrs. S. E. Burke and E. Armishaw. FALCON CUP SOCCER The Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A and Ponsonby teams met at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon in the replay of the Falcon Cup'semi-final. -Mount Albert was lucky to have a goal margin at the final whistle. It will now meet Metro-College in the final next Saturday, the Auckland v. Combined Services match having been postponed to allow the local competitions to finish. Mount Albert had a slight territorial advantage in the First spell, but the half-time score was 1-all. In the second spell, in spite of a heavy shower which made ground and ball slippery, football of a high standard was played, and Mount Albert showed out with better combination, in which Ward, Yates. Thompson and Hutchinson were always dangerous. in the fourth grade semi-final, played as a curtain-raiser. WELLINGTON, Sunday An emphatic denial that the Government had any political aims so far as control of sport was concerned was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, when addressing delegates from 12 provincial councils of spor* in Wellington. The Minister said he personally had no wish to see political interference in sport, and that also was the attitude of the Government. Its concern was first with the physical welfare of the people. Alle gations that the Government contemplated regimentation of sport, or the making of sport compulsory, was nonsense. There was no thought of Stale control. He added, however, that unity was essential among sporting organisations. and he wanted an assurance of unity to support, him in his representations to the Cabinet.

BOWLING OPENINGS Edendale Club.—The season was officially opened nn Saturday afternoon by the president. Mr. W. McCloiighen. The Auckland Centre was represented by Messrs. A. S. Dignan (president). M. J. Walsh (vice-president), W M Matheson (executive), and W. W. King (secretary). Mr. H. A. Anderson, Mayor of Mount Albert, and Mr. A. S. Richards. M.P., were also present. The president referred to the improvements made to the club's property, and both Mr. Anderson and Mr. Dignan congratulated the club upon its progress. The first jack was thrown by Mrs McCloughen. and the first bowl was played by Mr. N. Edmonds one of the oldest members of the club. Marigcre.—-The official opening was held on Saturday, the ceremony being periorrned by the president, Mr. E. Wilton Heavy rain caused an abandonment of play, a iter six heads had been decided. The Auckland Centre was represented by Mr. L. Keys, who congratulated the club on its enterprise in laying down a new full-sized green.
