north turns national Two changes in Auckland city representation were made as a result of the "N election. The outstanding feature was the defeat of Mr. J. A. Lee, Leader of ihn Democratic Labour Party, whose huge majority of 8607 when he held the seat as a Labour candidate in 1938 was wiped oii't and converted into de- ; f eat by Mr. F. Hackett (Labour) by 5702 votes. Mr H. T. Morton won Waitemata for the National Party from Mrs. 'M. M- Dreaver (Labour) by a small Mr. W. P. Endean, Mr. n M. Algie held Remuera for the National Party with an absolute majority over the five other canThe s positions of the leading candidates in Eden fluctuated as returns came in and -it was only after the addition of the soldiers' votes that Mr. W- T. Anderton (Labour) was shown to have held the seat with a majority of 50 votes over Lieutenant-Colonel ~>V. H. Fortune (National). Roskill a lso was uncertain for a time, but Jlr, A. S. Richards finally held the seat for Labour with a comfortable but reduced majority The two Ministers holding Auckland city seats, the Hon. W. E. Parry and the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, were reelected with substantial majorities. - Mr. P- Carr (Labour) increased his majority in Auckland West, while Mr. jr. W. Schramm held Auckland with a reduced majority. The Otahuhu ' > Labour majority was very considerably reduced, while in Onehunga Mr. A. G. Osborne's Labour majority was 3189 against 4314 in 1938. The three northern seats, Bay of Islands, Marsden and Kaipara, all went to the National Party, two of them being gains. In one, Marsden, a Minister, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, was defeated by Mr. A. J. Murdoch by a comfortable' majority. Details of the voting are as follows:
