SUCCESS OF MANUKAU GOOD SHOWING BY MARIST A good display of the code was witnessed at t'arhnv Park on Saturday, when Marist made a strong, but unsuccessful, effort (o check Ihc run of successes of Manukau in the Auckland Rugby League's championship. Olahuhu and North Shore played a drawn game on No. '2 ground, while Ponsonby showed its best form this season to easily beat Newton. A wide difference in the weights played an important part in the success of Manukau against Marist. The former had a little more finish in the backs. A feature of the game was the outstanding tackling of the whole Marist team Marist took the lead early, but Manukau scored three tries as the result of brilliant individual efforts and at half-time the score was: Manukau, 0. Marist, In the second hall* Manukau threw the ball about in great, style, and made the play open. Marist was by no means out of it, and the inside backs, Mc.Williams and Costello, stood up well to moro experienced opponents. The injury to Nicholson, halfback, was a heavy handicap to Marist. Martin, Major, Murray, Wateno and Shilton, Hemi converting one and kicking a penalty goal), Marist, 15 (tries by MeWilliams, Simpson and Skinner, Simons and Brackless converting a try each and Glover kicking a field goal); City, 15 (tries by A. Donovan, 2, and Silva, Donovan converting two and Clarke one), Mount Albert, 7 (try by Cowley, converted by Cranch, who also kicked a penalty goal); North Shore, 10 (tries by Martin and Wilkie. and two penalty goals by McCarthy), Otahuhu, 10 (tries by Speedy 2, Riley converting both); Ponsonby, Ml (tries by Manley 2, Brussey '2, Sullivan, Williams and Gee, Webb converting three and Morrell one, and Rapana kicking a field goal), Newton, 10 (tries by Brady and McKay, and two penalty goals by Hammond).
