THE LEAGUE CODE

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP RICHMOND DEFEATS CITY High scoring was a feature at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when Richmond outclassed City in the main game of the Auckland Rushy League's senior grade competition There was a large attendance, In the curtain-raiser, the fast Manukau forwards gave a splendid exhibition of passing and were too good for Otahuhu. More closely contested matches were witnessed on No. 2 ground, where Maris! heat Ponsonhy in a keen struggle, and Mount Albert continued its good form to win from North Shore. The spectators were disappointed with City's poor showing against Richmond, as a close game was expected. The Richmond hacks were superior all round, and their speed played a big part in City's downfall. Little fault could be found with the City forwards, but the backs lacked initiative and were frequently caught out of position. Interest in the first spell was intense and a great second half was anticipated. Richmond led by II points to 5, but the scores should have been ■ ■loser. The City backs played really well hi the first :io minutes. However, in the second spell, Richmond had matters all its own way. The rear division attacked from all positions, and the speed bewildered City City's positional play was bad, and it may have paid to play an extra hack in the threequarter line. A majority ot Richmond's tries came from enterprising play by McGregor, Tiffleton and Harkins. McGregor is the most promising back in tlie code. Magill gave a sound display at fulback and started effective movements. McDonald played well at half and Kinney on the wing, used his pace to advantage. The Richmond forwards played the correct type of open play, and Davis, Kipa uid Seymour were always prominent. Clark, it fullback, was easily the best of the City wicks, while Mataira and McManus did good vork among the forwards. Results were: —Richmond, 3(> (tries by Kinney 2, Harkins 2, McGregor, Davis, Kipa and Jack. McDonald converting five and Magill one), City, 5 (try by H. Donovan, con-.M-ted by Clarke); Manukau, 23 (tries by
