THE GAS SUPPLY
IMPROVED OUTLOOK BETTER COAL ARRIVES The timely arrival of a shipment of coal of improved quality at the Auckland Gas Company's city works yesterday made the outlook for the rest of the week brighter, but the shortage of supply for a time yesterday was both severe and widespread. The city areas fared better than usual, but the position in outlying suburbs was worse. The central holders became empty at 10.80 a.m., stated Mr. R. Worley, manager of the company, but it was possible to maintain half-pressure for the greater part of the day. By .seven o'clock last evening, normal pressure had been restored in the metropolitan area. Kor the second time since the supply difficulty became acute, Mangere, OtaItuliu and i'apatoetoe were without ga.s between "j and 8 p.m. The problems of maintaining sufficient heat lor wanning hospital wards, supplying hot water for surgeries and ensuring the functioning of poultry brooders, for which purposes gas is largely used, were solved by adapting primus lamps, each of which was fitted with incandescent burners.
