RUGBY FOOTBALL

navy beats manukau MAR IST AND GARRISON LEAD Matches in the Auckland Rugby Onion's senior championship on Saturday afternoon were played in wet weather and with the grounds heavy and the ball greasy and difficult to handle. There was a fair attendance at Eden Park, where two senior games were played on the oval. In the main match Navy created a surprise by defeating Manukau. one o the leading teams, by U points to 3. after leading <3—o at half-time. In the earlier contest Marist, another of the leading teams, won h.v a good margin over Technical Old UO.Vb

Marist and Garrison are now equal in the lead for championship honours, (lie latter winning narrowly jr. a keenly-contested game iwtli ,\|. I. 1 , Both these teams were weakened by the absence of players at Whangarei takmgpart in an Army match. Nav.vs win over .Manukau was due largely to mm piav by it* forwards. They adapted l,iemseiv<>* well to the conditions,' and suppi.nted each <ll her splendidly in loose rushes, l lie backs did good work in checking the Maiiukiu forwards, Bell-Booth playing a particularly sound game, first at wing-three-ouarter and later at fullback. He took nn the latter. position after Lawton had been carried oft with a sprained ankle 1", minutes after >V? r i <>f the second spell. Lawton had also made some line saves in the first spell. JSavy scored three tries to Manukau's one, so there was no fluke about its win. Manukau strned hard to make up its leeway in the second spell, and went close to scoring on a lew occasions Fowler's try. the only one obtained by Manukau, was the outcome of his amnty to see an opening, and he cut through the defence in brilliant style. Marist scored a couple of tries in the early part of its game, and never looked like being defeated afterwards. Sorenson played a fine game at fullback, apart from his scoring 11 points—-a try and four conversions. Pol lowing were the results:—X aw, <J (tries b.v \\ aldegrave, Bell-Booth and Barry), Manu- £, au ,s :J 'try by Fowler); Marist, 26 (tries bv E. Enwnght, Taylor. Barchard, Sorenson. WHANGAREI, Sunday A high wind influenced the scoring in the Army .Rugby match at Kensington Park yesterday afternoon, when the First Division beat the northern Military District bv IT points to 10. The winning team scored 12 points in the first spell when playinpr with the wind, « 4i , d a converted try immediately after the interval. Favonred with a semi-galo in the second spell, the Northern District retaliated with two converted tries, but rain made the ball and ground greasy and spoiled trie team s chancer. Hook (fullback), J. Smith (centre), who r' ore - ,V, vo tri , r,s brilliantly, and Hart (first five-eighths), who kicked a perfect potted goal were outstanding backs, while Terrv, Jacobs and Johnson were the best of a liard-working pack. Ihe Northern District's backs were disappointing, Hedge, Berghan and Gibbons being the best. Gunning, Clough and Ward were most in the picture. Scorer for the First Division was Smith, two tries. Hook converted both and kicked a penalty goal, and Hart potted a goal. Hedge and Hvslop scored for Northern District, Hedge converting both.

THE LEAGUE CODE MANUKAU TEAM'S WIN SUPERIOR FORWARD PLAY Manukau retained its lead in the Auckland Rugby League's senior championship by narrowly defeating Richmond at Cartaw Park on Saturday afternoon in one of the best wetday games seen for many years. In spite of heavy rain, a large crowd stood on the terraces, and the grandstand was full before 'J o'clock. Bright passing and exciting incidents were features of the game. Territorially the honours were with Richmond, which had a little the better of the first spell. There was no score at half-time. It was only in the last 15 minutes that Manukau gained the upper hand, and scored two tries. The much lighter Richmond team put up a splendid fight. The conditions favoured Mamikau, but there was not much between the two teams. As the game progressed, the playing area became worse, and it was almost impossible to pick out the players. One movement, started by Lawther in Richmond's twenty-five, was Site best of the game. Six Richmond players handled in turn, and McGregor and Lipscoinbe just missed scoring. On the day, Manukau, mostly as the re.Milt of superior forward play, was the better team, and deserved its victory The fast following up of the big Manukau forwards frustrated many movements by the Richmond backs. The forwards handled particularly well. The fullbacks, Martin (Manukau) and Magill (Richmond), played excellent games. Their defence and positional play was frequently applauded. Taumata and Butler, the Manukau wings, showed speed and initiative. Inglis, who played at halfback, and later in the forwards, was excellent all round Among the forwards, Shilton. Thompson and Te Tai played well. Davis was a fine worker for the Richmond forwards. Results were. —Manukau, 6 (tries by 0. Martin and Inglis), Richmond, '2 (penalty goal by Magill); City, If; (tries by Salnia 2, James and A. Donovan, Clarke converting two). North Shore, O; Otahuhu. 1(5 (tries by Speedy, Morris, Halscy and Simons, Riley converting one and kicking a penalty goal), Newton. !) (tries bv Duncan, Wait ere and Cleave): Mount Albert, in (tries by Cowley 2, Cranch. Beaucomb and McKinnon. Cranch and Clement converting one each). Ponsonby, 3 (try by Napier). ASSOCIATION GAMES The final series in the first round of the Auckland Football Association's senior competition was played on Saturday. At Blandford Park in the early game Eastern Suburbs, bv its defeat of Garrison, made sure of being iii the first six which will play off for the championship. Papakura suffered defeat by Ponsonb.v. and with a game in hand is level with Garrison. Another loss to Papakura will mean a play-off with Garrison for sixth place on the table

The curtain-raiser was a fast and interesting contest in which the Eastern Suburbs players showed out with clever passing and fa.-i, following up. In the main attraction the Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys side was mi defence most of the first spell, but held the odd goal ir three advantage at half-time. Met ro-( 'ollesre worked hard in the second -pel!, but was inclined to play too much to the win^s. Following were the scores and scorers: — Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A.
