MOST FAMOUS ARMIES NEW ZEALAND'S PART In paying homage to the Eighth Army after the Tunisian victory Richard Capell. war correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph in the Middle East, said such a tale of vast and sweeping victories chequered by staggering reverses, of endurance and endeavour, would never weary British ears. The writer says the only other army, being a constituent formation, with a similar place in British annals was General Plumer's Second Army of the last war, but the Second Army's constituents were never the same three months running. It is worthy of note that the Now Zealand Division formed part of Plumer's command for the greater part of its service in France from 1916 to 1918. The Eighth Army was first referred to as such in the autumn of 1911, the formation previously having been known as the Western Desert Force. SPORT FOR SOLDIERS RACES IN NEW CALEDONIA (N.Z.E.F Official War Correspondent) NEW CALEDONIA. June '27 Such a race meeting as New Zealand soldiers overseas dream of sometimes but never expect to see until their return to the Dominion was staged in one ol the areas in New Caledonia on Saturday. It was a fully-fledged meeting on a full-sized track, with seven horses, seven jockeys and a few thousand spectators contributing to the liveliness of the afternoon. The fact that the t.otalisator handled the equivalent, of £SOOO in New Zealand currency on the five races is testimony to the popularity of the meeting. Nearly all the ollicials had had experience of racing iu New Zealand, and the soldiers had put every effort into the erection of buddings and the laying out of the track. Considering the fact that the- horses, lent lor the occasion by Colonel 11. P. I)i\". a former Imperial officer now resident in New Caledonia, had been in the hands of the New Zealand hoys for training for only a few weeks, the times recorded were very good. Pacing was of a high order, and the crowd roared its approval as two or three horses struggled gallantly down the long straight toward the finish. On the course there was colour in plenty, provided in part by visiting French women, dressed in attractive summer suitings, but primarily by the natives, whoso singular appreciation of bright colours was evidenced by their selection of robes. FACTORY VENTILATION Figures showing the effects of ventilation upon productive eliiciencv, sickness and accident rates, which have been proved in factories in Great Britain and elsewhere, are given in a bulletin issued by the Industrial Psychology Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington.
