There was a good attendance and the Auckland Rugby League will donate the gate takings to the Liberty Loan. City won by only one point and .Marist must be considered a little unlucky not to prevail. City had a nine-point margin at half-time, but' failed to score in the second spell. Marist scored three tries against two by City. The hitter's forwards were a little superior in the loose, while the Marist backs were h. more effective set, and Finished off their movements better. The Marist forwards played with plenty of dash in the last 15 minutes, which were full of exciting incidents. Several times Marist threatened to pull the game out of the fire, and it was only stubborn defence by the City backs which saved the game. Mataira played an outstanding game for City and was the nest forward on the ground McManus also played well and showed initiative in assisting the backs. Grotte, the City captain, showed sound defence Hutchinson, halfback, gave good service from the scrum, and Clarke, fullback, was very sound. Besides Costello, McWilliams played well at five-eights for Marist, and Simpson, McLeod and Knight were the pick of the forwards. In a fast and open curtain-raiser.
