AWAPUNI ACTIVITIES SPRINT BY CAROLINE BAY (0.C.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday -tir A , fter heavy rain on Tuesday night and on Wednesday, the tracks were heavy at Awapuni this morning, when there was some interesting work, with plenty of jumping. Idle Hour was the only one to jump the country, giving a sound display except for a tendency to run about at some of the fences. Moderate appeared to be going better than Ked Glare in a bout over four hurdles. Greek Effort beat Young Charles and Rhodes in a similar task. Hunting Comet jumped attractivelv over three hurdles, and so did Native Chief, who looks to be none the worse for his fall at Marton. Ascot Bloom, Poutu and Owing all jumped cleanly. Jhe flags were out 30 feet on the course proper, where the best gallop appeared lo bo that of Caroline Bay, which beat Hinepo over five furlongs in 1.7 4-5. Stairway and Donegal Bay also ran five furlongs, which they completed in 1.9. Merry Vaals and Alchemy covered six furlongs in 1.25. War Credit and Circnlar Note placed seven furlongs behind in 1.38. Mr. Chips, 8.0, is an acceptor for the Mangawhata Hack Handicap. DEATH OF VALKYRIAN The death has. occurred of the Englishbred stallian Valkyrian, who had been located in South Canterbury for several years past. He was foaled in 1917 and was imported to New Zealand by Dr. W. C. Ring, Auckland, in 3922. Valkyrian was by William the Third, the best staying son of St. Simon, from Valkyr, by Eager, son of Enthusiast, from St. Natalia, half-sister to the Oaks winner La Sagesse, by Common from St. Mary, by Hermit. Valkyrian sired many useful horses, both flat performers and jumpers. Among them were Valpeen, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase twice, the Great Northern Steeplechase twice, and the Wellington Steeplechase; Slayer. Prince of Orange. Strip, Valarth, Val Watch, Lord Val; and good performers by him on the flat were Sleeveles#, Norseman. Shy, Prince Val and Vali.
