THE LEAGUE CODE

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP MANUKAU DEFEATS CITY The largest crowd of the season witnessed a splendid game at C&rlaw Park on Saturday, when Manukau defeated City to make the two teams level in the Auckland Rugby League's senior championship. The match was full of thrilling incidents. It was in the backs that Manukau was a little superior. A. Donovan, Grathe and James (all of City) played below their usual form. The forwards were very evenly matched, and it was only late in the game that Manukau gained the ascendancy. City was unlucky in the way of injuries, losing Hughes, the hooker, in the first spell, and Dufty, who replaced him, limped for most of the game, Salaia, the centre-three-quarter, retired hurt 20 minutes before the final bell. Manukau, however, deserved its victory. The first spell ended in favour of Manukau by 5 points to 3. Early in tho second spell City drew level, but the Manukau backs combined more effectively and scored two good tries. The first was lucky as the ball was dropped in a i>assing bout, and appeared to be knocked forward. Murray's first try caine from careless play by James and Clarke. For the winners, Martin gave a brilliant display at fullback, and proved a decided stumbling-block to City. Butler and Tumata, the wing-threequartere, excelled in determined running and good tackling. Watene played an outstanding game among the forwards, and Shilton and Thompson were also splendid in the loose. Clarke, Legge (backs), and Mataira (forward) were the best for City. Results were:—Manukau, 13 (tries by Watene, Murray and Major, Butler converting two), City, 8 (tries by E. Donovan and Legge and penalty goal by A. Donovan); Mount (Albert, 14 (tries by Jones, H. Zane and Cuples, Ciement converting one and Baulcomb kicking a penalty goal), Newton, 5 (try by Silva, converted by Isiwa); Marist. 21 (tries by Simpson, McWilliams and Wiberg, Simmons converting two, kicking four penalty goals), Otahuhu, 8 (four penalty goals by Riley). ASSOCIATION GAMES Keen plav was witnessed in the championship matches of the Auckland Football Asso ciation oil Saturday afternoon. The high wind early in the afternoon gave the side which won the toss an advantage which was missing later on. Eastern Suburbs surprised with a reversal of form to beat Papakura Camp at Blandford Park in a game which was thrilling and open. The main attraction, between Metro-College A and Garrison, saw a drab first half in which neither side scored. In the second spell Metro-College worked better, and some pretty passing was witnessed, although the final score of 3 —o in its favour was flattering. Following were the scores and scorers:— Eastern Suburbs, 8, (Gilbert 3, Dempsey 2, Welch 2, Neilson), Papakura Camp, 5 (Donaldson 3, Valentine, Danby); MetroCollege A, 3 (Wood 2. E. R Drummond when he was in command of the New Zealand station.
