THE LEAGUE CODE

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES CITY TEAM BEATS NEWTON Fast and opon play was witnessed by a large crowd at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when City easily defeated Newton to gain its fifth successive win in the senior championship of the Auckland Rugby League City gave a good display of team work and its backs outplayed the Newton set. Neither team was at full strength. City played without the Donaldson brothers and Mataira. while Gregory, Newton's captain, was also absent. 'Jljiero was a good deal of hard play among the forwards, and one Newton forward was ordered off. Another Newton forward was a noticeable aggressor, being twice warned. Splendid play by Ihe City inside backs was a feature of the game and McManns, the backrow forward, excelled in the loose to score three tries in succession. The half-time score favoured City by 19 points to 0. In the second spell Newton gave a much betler display and its backs were frequently applauded for fast and clever play. The try scored by Kendall came from perfect understanding and good positional play. The forwards were evenly matched and there was some good play in the loose. The Newton set got the ball more, but the fault lay with the inside backs, who found the City pair superior in defence and with more initiative on attack. Legge, at five-eighths, gave an outstanding display and deeply penetrated the defence on numerous occasions, while Hutchinson, the half, varied his play well. W. Clark, the City fullback, did well for his first game this season. McManus was the best forward on the ground. City now leads for flic championship by four points from Manukau, which has olayed one game fewer. A feature of the series was the surprise defeat of Otahuhu by Mount Albert, which •howed excellent form and is improving each week. Results were: —Richmond. 0 (tries by Kenney and W. Tittleton), Marist, 0; Mount Albert. 19 (tries by Cowley 'J. and M. Zane, Cranch converting two and kicking three penalty goals), Otahuhu. 1." ASSOCIATION GAMES Spectacular and exciting play with close decisions marked the games in the Auckland Football Association's championship on Saturday afternoon. Comrades and Training College played a drawn game at Blandford Park, the latter holding the balance of play, and Comrades scored the equalising goal in the last 30 seconds only. The main attraction, between Garrison and Papakura Camp, was a good display, Garrison winning by a margin of one goal. Papakura was without Wilson and Reid, and took some time to settle down, but C. FJyger, Nimrno and Todd distributed the play to advantage along the front line, ■where Valentine was always in the picture. On the right Yates pleased with speedy runs down the line and accurate centres, which Sharp and Donaldson turned goalwards. The Garrison goalkeeper, McGillvray, was uncertain in the early stages, but settled down to a fine display against the hard-driving attack. Danb.v made an effective pivot and was strong both on defence and attack. The front line was sound and showed a good understanding. The result was a fair indication of the play throughout:—
