THE LEAGUE CODE

SOME CLOSE CONTESTS GOOD SHOWING BY OTAHUHU The evenness of the senior Rugby League teams was again in evidence at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when a .large crowd witnessed two well-contested games 011 the main ground. In the principal match, Manukau just defeated Otahuhu, which led to within a few minutes of time. Otahuhu put up a sterling performance, playing a forward short in tho last 15 minutes. Manukau rallied, to rouse the spectators to unusual enthusiasm. The play was marked by splendid tackling, and in the first .spell it was .not spectacular. The score at half-time was 2-all. In the second spell, the Otahuhu backs dominated the game, and many times threatened Manukau's lino. A splendid run by Mullins paved the way for a good try scored by Speedy, and victory looked likely for the young team. The tackling was deadly at this stage, and every Manukau effort met with solid resistance. Inc. Manukau men appeared tired toward tho end, but a fine effort by Inglis and Seymour carried the day. Manukau fielded a heavier pack than usual. The forwards included J. Cootes, Wellington and New Zealand representative, and P. Kirinui, both making their first appearance this season. At fullback for Manukau. Martin gave a high-class display, and "his tackling was a feature of the game. Shilton and Potaka played well among tho forwards. A lot of praise is due to E. McManus, the youngest Otahuhu back, for an outstanding game at, five-eighths. Speedy and Mullins were also prominent. The curtain-raiser, between City and Richmond, was a good exhibition of the code, and victory for City was gained only in the last three minutes. A feature of the game was the scoring of A. Donovan, who added nine of the 15 points obtained by City. Results were:—Manukau. 10 (tries by Shilton and Seymour, Butler converting one and kicking a penalty goal), Otahuhu, 7 (try by Speedy, Mullins converting and kicking a penalty goal); City, 15 (tries by Mataira, Salaia and A. Donovan, Donovan converting one and kicking two penalty goals), Richmond. 12 (tries by Magi)!' and Lipscombe, Magill converting one try and kicking two penalty goals); Ponsonbv, 10 (tries by Morrell '2, McDonnell and Thomas, Kay converting one and kicking a penalty goal), Marist, 9 (try by White, converted by Barnes, who also kicked two penalty goals); Mount Albert, 15 (tries by Leatherbarrow, Bradford and Jones, Leatherbarrow converting three), North Shore, 2 (penalty goal by Meredith).

HOCKEY SEASON The Auckland Hockey Association's second series of senior matches was played on Saturday afternoon at Papatoctoe. Grammar Old Boys and Wesley-United provided the main attraction: the play for the most part being fast and open, although the stickwork of some of the players called for a little more attention. "Wesley-United was on the attack for the greater portion of the first spell; but Grammar's defence stood up to all demands made, the score at half-time being one goal each. In the second spell Grammar's halfline overshadowed the opposition and gave its forwards plenty of chances, where H.
