LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP OPENING SERIES DECIDED Close scoring and evenly-contested matches were a feature of the opening of the Auckland Rugby League's season at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance, and the playing grounds were in perfect order. Play in the main game between Newton and Richmond, was bright only in patches. The Newton backs give promise of developing into a strong attacking force once the players get fit. The Newton forwards did not have matters all their own way, in spite of an advantage in weight. The Richmond rear division did well on occasions against more experienced plavers. The territorial advantage in the first spell was mostly with Newton, which led by 8 points to 2 at half-time. Richmond went close to winning in the second spell, and may have, had its captain elected to take opportunities for goal points, instead of directed punts. Outstanding among Newton's backs were Gregory, centre, and Delamere, live-eighths. Rangi, halfback, varied the attack well. Ginders, Duncan and Zimmerman played good games among the forwards. McDonald was one of the best of the Richmond backs, while Davis and Williams were pro- , minent in the forwards. The curtain-raiser, between Ponsonby and j City, was a brighter exhibition than the main j game. City won by the stronger attacking force of its backs, and the team should take a lot of beating as the season advances. The City forwards proved too strong for the opposition in the tight work. Mataira (City) was the best forward on the ground. Kay was the outstanding Ponsonby back. Results were:—

Newton, 10 (tries by Gregory, Duncan, Ginders and Silva, Richards and Delamere each converting), Richmond, 12 (tries by Davie, McDonald, Magill kicking a penalty goal and converting oho try, and McDonald kicking a field goal); City, 17 (tries by Salaia, James and Mataira (A. Donovan converted two tries and kicked two penalty goals), Ponsonby, 13 (tries by Mowell, Kay and Beasley; Kay converted two tries); Marist, 15 (tries by Best, McLeod and Simons, Wiberg converting one and Simons kicking two penalty goals), Mount Albert, 10 (tries by Crancb and H. Zane, Cranch converting one and Leatherbarrow kicking a penalty goal); Manukau, 22 (tries by Newton 2, Murray. Kani, Butler and Seymour, Butler kicking a penalty goal and Murray converting one try), North Shore. 5 (McArthur a try. which Laing converted).

ASSOCIATION GAMES The Auckland Football Association opened its season on Saturday afternoon with five first division matches in which the play was fast and exciting and the decisions close. The general standard was high, the majority of teams being comprised of promoted juniors. At Blandford Park, Air Force had most of the play against Ponsonby in the early match, but Ponsonby won by the only goal scored. Comrades and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A. in the main attraction, provided good football, and the pace set and maintained was surprising for an opening match. The Comrades team was inclined to overdo close passing when well placed, and. although it had the balance of play, the more open game of Old Boys enabled the side to take the full points by the odd goal in three. Following were the scores and scorers:— Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A, 2 (C. Ekman 2), Comrades, 1 (Green); Ponsonby, 1 (Callaghan), Air Force. 0; Eastern Suburbs, 3 (Gilbert, Collins, Espie), Training College, 2 (Pickett. Simpson); North Shore. 2 (E Ekman 2).
