AIRMAN KILLED

PILOT UNDER TRAINING CRASH WHEN NIGHT-FLYING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday An airman pilot under training lost his life in an aircraft accident near a South Island station early this morning. He was: — Leading-Aircraftman Ralph James Brownlie, son of Mr. J. Brownlie, of Wairoa. The fatality occurred when an aircraft crashed during night-flying training.

TAXICAB CONTROL ROSTER AND TELEPHONES PROGRESS OF ORGANISATION Details of the plan for establishing a single taxicab telephone call system under tlio management of the Auckland Taxicab Control Committee, in place of the systems now operated by the Atta and Checker organisations, were completed by the chief clerk of the Transport Department, Mr. H. B. Smith, during his visit to Auckland this week, and have now been submitted to tho Minister of Transport, the Hon. J. O'Brien, for final review. The chairman of the committee, Mr. Lisle, Alderton said yesterday that when tho Minister's approval was received tho new call system would be established without any unnecessary delay. It would be necessary to engage staff and to impose a levy on taxicab licensees. Members of the two organisations were already paying weekly levies for the upkeep of the respective systems, and their liability would now be to the committee, which had been empowered to mako levies for the purpose by a recent amendment to the regulations. Practically no further work on tho taxicab roster was required, Mr. Aiderton added, and it would bo brought into operation shortly. FLYING CROSS AWARD

AUCKLAND AIRMAN News that Flying-Officer S. Jackson Madill had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross was received yesterday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. li. Madill, of Tamaki Drive, Kohimarama.

Flying-Officer Madill, who is now 29. was educated at King's College and Auckland University College. At the outbreak of the war ho was engaged 011 his father's farm. On joining the Air Force he trained in New Zealand and in Canada, where he opined his wings. Shortly after reaching England Fly-ing-Officer Madill was selected for work fin Flying Fortresses, and later he flew to Egypt in a Liberator bomber. About six months ago he was awarded the order of the Crown of Yugoslavia for services to that country. He is now 011 other special work. His parents do not know the special act for which ho has received this latest decoration. WRONG USE OF CAMERA DANE TO PAY £lO FINE Charged with making a photograph of defence works at Russell, a Danish street photographer, Erik Borgc Wollesen (Mr. Hogben), appeared before Mr. J. H. Lnxford, S.M., yesterday. A plea of guilty was entered. Senior-Detective Walsh said that accused signed off a Norwegian tanker in 1939 and had been a street photographer since. The charge arose out of a visit to tho north, during which accused photographed some defence works. Counsel submitted it was accused's first holiday in three years, and he had wanted quite naturally to keep a photographic record. There was nothing sinister in the action. The magistrate said the photograph seemed to have been taken to show the topography of the area, but he was satisfied with the police assurance that accused's behaviour in the past had been good. A fine of £lO was imposed. FOOD CONFERENCE (7.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday The Prime Minister,, the ftt. Hon. P. Eraser, said to-day that the Government had received advice of the postponement from April 27 until May 18 of the international food conference to be held in the United States and at which it has been announced that New Zealand will be represented*
