AUCKLAND EXCHANGE STRONG FINISH TO WEEK Business was brisk on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, and brokers finished the week with a substantial turnover. Recent firm values were fully maintained, arid several fresh gains wore recorded. Insurances were in keen demand, and New Zealands moved up to sell at 78s 9d, with more wanted at that figure. Breweries attracted special attention, and Dominions, with a transfer at .'Us 3d, touched their lushest level in recent years. Bank shares and Government- issues wore steady at late rates. INVESTMENT TREND A BUOYANT MARKET Keen bidding and a buoyant atmosphere were features of the week on the Auckland Stock Exchange. All classes shared in a general improvement and the market closed with a thoroughly confident tone. There was moderate activity in Government issues, with an improved demand for tho 3 per cents, and the 53-56's gained 5s with final business at £9O 7s Gd. Comparisons of Government issues, with those ruling on April 2 and a year ago, are as follows: Year Last This Ago Week Week £ £ £ Stk.. 15/1/53-57,3% 108% 103%* 103%* Do., 15/4/40-10, 4 101% 10! 103 3 4* Do., 15/6/52-55,4 106%* Joo%* 100%* Do.. 31/5/54-58,4 107%* 107%* 107%* War Loan. 1/10/53 80* 01%* 91% Do., 1/8/51-54. 3 99% 98% 98%* L. Nationals of New Zealand continued firm at their latest peak, 51s, and Bank of New Zealand shares were active at 40s fid. Insurance scrip returned lo favour and the, slight hesitancy to recognise new high levels noticed during the last fortnight disappeared. One to reports of reduced turnover chain stores were easier, but other sections of Australian securities were firm. Colonial Sugars gained another 5s with sale at 1'55 10s and Broken Hill Proprietary shares wero active with buyers moving •:r> to 12s to obtain supplies. There was again .iii unsatisfied demand for miscellaneous Dominion issues. .In spite of the heavy burden imposed by taxation and all-round increases in manufacturing costs as well as the uncertainty existing with regard lo supplies of raw material, investors are prepared fo pay high prices for all approved industrials. Conversely, holders are disinclined to put a price on their shares. In Ihe circumstances inquiries continue to cover a steadily-expanding area and sales have been made of many securities that are rarely quoted. Timber and woollen shares are very firmly held. Dominion Breweries recorded further advances with final business at 34s 3d. Sanfords. both ordinary and preference, selling at 5s 5d and 10s 3d respectively, wero at their highest level In recent years. The scrip of firms concerned with farming interests had a steady inquiry. Newton-King preference shares_ continued active at- I /s. and Farmers' Auctioneering 1! nreference -sold 3d up at 23s Od. Tho ruining section reacted lavourably to the announcement that as post-war policy America and Britain proposed to retain a gold standard as a basis for international dealings, and Marthas changed hands at 10a 3d a Gd advance. 1012 Us!
