HENDEESON DANCE ,„SWAN CLUB BENEFITS A very successful dance was held on Thursday night at the Henderson Town Hall by "the members of the Henderson sub-centre of the Women's War Service Auxiliary. . The stage was most effectively decorated with clumps of bamboo and artificial grasses to convey the impression of a wooded island.- A band from Auckland provided spirited music and two Monte Carlo waltzes were included on the programme. Supper was provided by the Henderson members of the W W.S.A. and their friends and wellwishers. Over 400 people attended and. as a result, the Henderson sub-centre was able to hand over the substantial sum of £2O as a donation to the funds of the Swan Club, the new W.W.S.A. club in the Queen's Arcade. FIRST-AID IN PAPUA MISSION-TAUGHT NATIVES "The first aid and home nursing taught to native boys at the Bamu River .Mission, Papua, proved invaluable at .Milne Bay and in the Owen Stanley Ranges," said Mrs. E. Standen, when addressing the Feminist Club in Sydney recently. Mrs. Standen and her inissionarv husband, now serving with the Royal Australian Air Force in New Guinea, were in charge of the misI sion before Japan entered the war. The [Bamu River boys did very good work in Papua, and one was decorated for valour in the Owen Stanley Ranges. Mrs. Standen's former cook is now serving as interpreter to the forces, and another boy from the mission is cutting timber for the army. One of the crafts taught at the mission by Mrs. Standen before she left Papua was papier niache work. As a result, a great deal of hospital equipment made by the natives has been sent | to Thursday Island. GREY LYNN RED CROSS The annual meeting of the Grey Lynn sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held on Thursday night in the Baptist Hall, Richmond Avenue. Inaugurated on May 11 last year with 51 members, this sub-centre has been functioning most satisfactorily in every way and great progress has been made, the membership at March 31 last having: reached 116. Officers were re-elected as follows:—President. Captain Banyard; vice-presidents, Mrs E. E. Mills, the Rev. R. Godfrey and Mr. D. Mann, J.P.; chairman, the Rev. D. H. Stewart; honorary secretary. Mrs. M. Skelton: honorary treasurer, Mrs I. Hammond; honorary auditor. Mr. W. H. Newton;' delegates to the Auckland Centre, the Rev. D. H. Stewart and the Rev. R. Godfrey; executive committee, Mesdamcs Rutledge. Thompson, Skinner, Mc-Cartie, Warnock, Sarney. Green, Milligan. Henderson, McLennan, Miss Minnie Lyori= and Dr. S. Satynand. The following conveners were elected: Comforts committee, Mrs Brockbank; entertainment committee, Mrs. H. McCartie; appeals committee. Mrs. P. Lanibie. PENWOMEN'S CLUB A play-reading, entitled "Men Are Missing," produced by Mrs. E. Schmitt, was presented by the drama circle of the Penwomen's Club on Friday afternoon. Musical items were contributed by Mrs. W. S. Clarke, Mrs. W. Osborne and Miss L. Young.
