WATER SUPPLY

VISIT TO RANGES MOUNT EDEN COUNCIL A small party from the Mount Eden Borough Council, headed by the Mayor, Mr. It. J. Mills, paid a visit to some of the City Council's water supply headworks in the Waitakere Ranges yesterday, under the guidance of the waterworks engineer, Mr. A. D. Mead. Mr. Mills had expressed a wish that representatives of the borough might have an opportunity of seeing one of the reservoirs under the present dry weather conditions, and the trip was arranged accordingly. The visitors were first shown the Titirangi filters, which deal with water from the Nihotupu dam, and the process by which suspended matter, mainly vegetable, is removed, was explained and demonstrated, together with the chemical and bacteriological tests used in the laboratory which serves the three filter stations iu the ranges. Lower Nihotupu Catchment From the ridge above the Scenic Drive, Mr. Mead showed the extent of the catchment area, covering 3100 acres, which the council owns in the broad lower portion of the Nihotupu Valley, and which is to be utilised in the next stage of development. He stated that the site of the weir from which running water would be pumped next summer was not far inland from the foreshore road to Huia and Cornwallis. The water would have to be lifted 400 ft. to the filter station. The site of the weir was that chosen for the dam proposed to bo built in the succeeding stage. Depleted Reservoir The party next visited the Nihotupu dam, approaching it from the West Coast Road, which crosses the upper part of the valley. The stream was still showing the effect of the recent rains, and was flowing with a good deal ol vigour over waterfalls at two points. In the reservoir, however, slopes of red rock stood up some 60ft. Irom the shrunken expanse of water on the valley bottom to the level line, where the bush and second growth began. In answer to a query whether it would not be advantageous to raise the dam and increase the storage capacity, Mr. Mead explained that the latter had been closely calculated on the basis of the amount of water which the catchment area of 2400 acres produced in a typical year. It was certain that the saving in overflow loss would be very small and not worth the considerable cost involved. Mr. Mead mentioned that the reservoir at present was holding only about a fifth of its total capacity
