H sation for National Security, which had f| now become a misnomer, would no longer be used. PATIENTS' FEES BOARD SEEKS INCREASE A decision to apply again to tho Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, for permission to increaso fees recoverable from certain classes of ' hospital patients from 15s to 18s a day was made by the Auckland Hospital Board last night. A letter received by the board in \ September from the Director-General of Health. Dr. M. H. Watt, advised that the Minister did not approve of a proposed increase in fees to 18s a day, but that as costs generally showed a tendency to increase he was prepared to reconsider the matter in six months. He recommended, however, that if the board then proceeded with the proposal, arrangements be made to consult boards generally through the Hospital Boards' Association in an endeavour to obta:.n uniformity. • | On the recommendation of the Fia- | ance and Purchasing Committee it was agreed that the application for permission to increase fees would be in respect of the following classes of patients: Those not ordinarily resident in Neir Zealand and not entitled to claim hospital benefits under the Social Security Act; those having a right to recover damages and medical expenses in respect of an injury and whose right to ] benefits was restricted by the Social Security Act and in respect of whom the board was entitled to recover fees; and. patients who were residents of other hospital board districts.

WOMEN'S HOME GUARD SCOTS GIRL BEST SHOT LONDON, Feb. 3 -Miss Catherine Dodds, of Edinburgh, wearing the blue trouser suit and bent of her unit, won the women's "Home Guard" rifle shooting contest in London. She scored 9!) in the final, and wiu hold the first prize, a silver rose bowl, for six months. Mrs. Proece, Leicester, was second with 98. and Mrs. Carpenter, Bristol, third with 96. Miss Dodds travelled all night to take part in the - contest. Very nervous and very shy, she wanted to take the next train home the moment the bovn had been presented to iier by Lorn 1 Wedgwood. Small and dark, she is i* book-keeper and spends all her spare time as shooting instructor to th« Edinburgh women's home defence unit, which has been in existence for a year longer than the parent organisations.
