WELLINGTON, Thursday The following Royal New Zealand Air Force casualty list was issued to-day, the rank being sergeant unless otherwise stated: Cowan, J. (Flying-Officer), killed on active service—Hastings. Tully, B. W., killed on active service—Waipukurau. Treacher, R., dangerously injured on active service— Hustings. McPhail, J. L. (Flying-Officer), injured on active service—Christ church. Prosser, H., slightly injured on active service —Westport. RECLASSIFICATIONS Clark, M. 0., missing, believed killed; previous!? missing— Christchurch. Kendal, C., missing, believed killed; previously mining—Napier. Kelly, C, L., death now officially presumed; previously reported missing—Cambridge. Webster, J., death now officially presumed; previously reported missing—Whakatanc. KILLED ON SERVICE TE AWAMUTU SOLDIER Advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Prince, of 15 Clarence Street, Hamilton, that their only son, Private Ernest Prince, who was reported missing last August, was killed in action on July 22. He was aged 28 and left New Zealand with an early reinforcement.
Before his enlistment Private Prince •was employed at To Awamutu, where his parents formerly lived, and he was e member of the Te Awamutu Municipal Band and of the Te Awamutu Hockey Club. FARMER FOUND SHOT ' EVIDENCE AT INQUEST JO.C.) WHANGAREI, Thursday A farmer, Mr. John Archibald Stewart, aged 38, single, of Whatiriri, was found dead near hush on his property to-day with a gunshot wound in the head. A shotgun was near by. Deceased attended a dance last night. An inquest was opened bv the district corner, Mr. J. G. Draper, this afternoon. A brother, Dudley A. Stewart, said he coukl give no reason for deceased's taking his life. Edna Ray Stewart, a sister, said that deceased owned the farm on which they lived with their mother, and he had never indicated an intention to take his life. They had no financial difficulties. He had "been happy in his work about the farm. Evidence was given by Constable C. Snow that a note was found beside the body. The note read: "I nm sorry, my dear little sisters and mother. Get some cheques out of my wallet." The inquest was adjourned. REHABILITATION WORK more information wanted (0.C.) PUKEKOHE. Thursday Several questions by the Pukekohe Borough Council were answered in a letter received from the Rehabilitation Board at last night's meeting of the council. The questions were asked after receipt of a circular letter to local bodies regarding suitable works for returned servicemen. The secretary of the hoard stated that it was proposed that the scheme would operate when hostilities _ ceased and that the purpose of seeking information from local bodies was to enable plans on a Dominion-wide basis to he submitted to the Government for consideration. In many instances, 110 doubt, the local bodies had plans and work that would be proceeded with normally, finance for which would be provided from rates or loans. In other instances it was anticipated that a subsidy would be necessary. The question ot a national memorial scheme had not Jet been considered. Members of the council expressed disappointment at the board's reply. More detail was required before the council jould go any further, said the Mayor, Mr. M. R. Grierson. With finances as they were at present the council could n °t embark on a large-scale scheme, ®. v en on the basis of a loan. The_ council had answered the board's aircular by Betting out a list of proposed works. SEAMEN CHARGED Charged with using a false pass to Rain access to a ship George Edward Weir, seaman, aged J9, pleaded guilty before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., yesterJj®y.
