ARMS FOUND IN CAR THREE YOUTHS CHARGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday Three Wellington youths, two aged 16 and the third aged 17, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Children's Court in Wellington this afternoon on remand from Masterton. Thev were charged will the conversion of a car and theft from a Home Guard headquarters of military weapons. They were arrested in the Wairarapa when the car was recognised by the police as one reported missing and the arms, two tommy-guns, a .303 rifle and a .22 pearifle, were found in the car The youths were remanded for one week, the magistrate ordering that they should be kept apart from others in detention.

THEFTS FROM SAFES ARREST MADE IN CITY Detectives investigating a, series of thefts and attempted thefts from safes in business premises in the city and province over the past two or three months, made an arrest in the city last evening. As a result a man will appear in the Police Court thjs morning. One of the biggest thefts was at Kaukapakapa, where a considerable amount of money, clothes and other goods was removed from the store of Frank Dye and Sons. OUTPUT OF LIME NO REDUCTION IN SOUTH (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday No reduction of lime output in the South Island is contemplated at present, Mr. 11. P. Connell, fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, told the North Canterbury District Primary Production Council. Mr. A. H. Spratt said a recent conferonce had been held between the Government and lime producers to discuss cutting production by 30 per cent. Mr. Connell said Mr. Spratt was referring to a conference of North Island lime interests with certain Government officials. A similar conference had been held with South Island representatives, but no such suggestion had been putup as far as the South Island was concerned. Hie North Island was in a different position.

A definite instruction has been given to lime companies to effect a rationing scheme in the near future, according to the manager of an important lime company. This instruction comes from the Government and is an outcome of difficulties encountered by the companies in securing enough labour, transport and sacks. WORK FOR ITALIANS (0.C.) NELSON, Thursday For such crops as peas Nelson requires a large amount of hand labour in the picking season. The suggestion for employing Italian prisoners-of-war on vegetable production is favoured by giowers. Gangs of 20 or 30 men in various parts of the district would prove very useful in augmenting the labour supply in the vegetable harvesting and fruit and hop-picking season. FAILURE TO REPORT (0.C.) TAURANGA, Thursday Charged with failing to report for military service, Nathaniel James McCarthy, farmhand, of Te Puke, who appeared before Mr. Walton, S.M., in Tauranga, was committed to a defaulters' camp. It was stated by Sergeant Austin that accused \yas called up on March 26. He lodged an appeal on religious grounds and this was dismissed. He was employed on his father's farm. RELIEF MONEY RETURNED (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Thursday A cheque for £SO forwarded from his relief fund by the Mayor of Whangaroi, Mr. \Y. Jones, to assist earthquake sufferers, has been returned by the Mayor of Masterton', Mr. T. Jordan, who expressed thanks for the generous gesture, but stated that as there was no benefit list in operation the money could not be retained. A similar sum sent for relief in Kaitaia has been acknowledged gratefully by the Kaitaia Town Board.
