K., of Auckland, previously | reported seriously ill; now removed from the seriously ill list. FORMER M.P. AND MAYOR MR. J. VIGOR BROWN'S DEATH (0.C.) NAPIER, Wednesday The death has occurred or Mr. John Vigor Brown, aged 88, former member of Parliament and Mayor of Napier. ~ Mr. Brown was born in Scotland, and was educated in Melbourne. He came to New Zealand in 1875, and in 1898 became manager of Neal and Close, Limited. He was also managing director of J. Vigor Brown and Company; and was connected with the White Swan Brewery and the Hawke's Bay Soap and Tannery Company. Mr. Brown served on the Napier Harbour Board for 22 years, and was chairman from 1904 to 1911. He was Mavor of Napier from 1907 until 1917, from 1919 to 1921, and from 1929 to 1933. Mr. Brown.was M.P. for Napier from 1908 until 1922. He was a member of the Napier Park Racing Club for many years, holding the offices of vice-president and treasurer at various times, and was president of the Chamber of Commerce. OBITUARY MR. F. H. GALLAGHER The death has occurred in Rotorua of Mr. Francis Henry Gallagher, aged 73, who was associated with the milling operations of the National Timber Company at Ngongotaha from the inception of its activities there. Mr. Gallagher was born in New Plymouth, but he spent the greater part of his life in Auckland. He was keenly interested in racing and in football, having played for the Ellerslie, Panmure and Grafton Clubs. He also played for the Grafton Cricket Club. ÜBS. MARY COMBES By the death at her residence, 111 Victoria Avenue, Remuera, yesterday, of Mrs. Mary Combes, an association ; with Auckland that was continuous for 88 years has been severed. Mrs. Combes was born in Grafton Road. Her husband, Mr. Frank H. Combes, died six years ago, two years after they had celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding. A son and daughter, five grandchildren and five great-grand-children survive. MRS. jELLEN. GARDNER The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Ellen Gardner, aged 90, of Minnehaha Avenue. Takapuna. Mrs. Gardner sailed as a child with her parents, Captain and Mrs. C. Tredwin, of Padstow, Cornwall, for Queensland. In that State* she was married to the late Mr. David Gardner, and on their arrival soon afterward in the Dominion Mr. Gardner became pro- ' prietor of the Rotorua Chronicle, now S ; the Morning Post. For the last 20 years Mrs. Gardner had resided in Takapuna, 1 She is survived by two sons and three daughters. MRS. ANNE M. JOHNSON A water-colour artist of wide reputation, Mrs. Anne Mavis Johnson, of , Cambridge, died recently. Mrs. Johnson was the widow of another well-known New Zealand artist, Cameron Johnson. She was born in Devonshire, and came to this country in her childhood. She is survived by a daughter and son.
