AWARD OF CROSS
NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN, NUMEROUS ENCOUNTERS (0.C.) CHKISTCHUECH. Wednesday News of the award of the Air Force j Cross to Squadron-Leader C. W. Bromley, who recently returned to New Zealand on loan from the Royal Air force to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has just been received. Squadron-Leader Bromley, who is a son of Mrs. F. M. Bromley, of Christchurch, wa.s well known in athletic circles in Christchurch a few years ago, and was Canterbury javelin-throwing champion. He left for England in 1935. The day before the outbreak of war} he went to France, and there was flying j Fairey Battle bombers for the first j few months of the conflict. He went on * to day bombers on his return to Eng- j land, and attacked the Germans on j their invasion of The Hague. He carried . on with bombing operations across the ! Channel until alter Dunkirk, and had ; numerous encounters with German j fighters—being mentioned in despatches, j After Dunkirk he was attached to an j operational training unit as tactical in- j structor. and later was in command of a training unit. While overseas. Squad-| ron-Leader Bromley married Miss Esme : Watson-Hill of London.
