RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR COMPETITION

ANOTHER WIN FOR M.T.P.

The M.T.P. team maintained its lead in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition by defeating Technical Old Boys in the main match at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon by 10 points to 8. The winning side led by 8 points to 3 at half-time and so scored eight points in each spell. The weather was line and the ground iu surprisingly good order after tho amount of ruin which fell earlier in the week. There was only a fair attendance. A very interesting curtain-raiser was witnessed betw-een teams representing the Army and the Navy, tho former winning by 20 points to 13. Members* of tho Army team had recently returned from service overseas and included tho representative players, D. Brady (Auckland), i. Allen (Canterbury) and M. Devine (Wairarapa and Wellington). On the Navy side also were two former Auckland representatives, G. Sellers (centre-three-quarter) and J. Barry (forward). Play in this match was fast and open and pleased the spectators. Brady and Allen were a good combination and initiated many of the Army's attacks. Tries for Army were scored by Allen (•_'), Webb and Devine, Strachan converting all four. Sellers and Cameron scored for Navy, Webster converting both and kicking a penalty goal. M.T.P. always had a good grip of its match against Technical. The latter team's strength lay in its forwards, who were very ably led by Ryan. The latter was in everything and followed up tirelessly throughout the game. Also conspicuous in the loose was McKenzie who played us a ro*er. Pike's hooking ability was again in evidence and be obtained possession from the majority of the set scrums. The Technical backs, however, could do little with the ball apart from kicking it and each liiul a turn at this. Apparently realising where their opponents' strength lay, the M.T.P. forwards played better Rugby than usual and gave their backs plenty of opportunities from line-outs and rucks*. Rilev and W. Tittleton, the five-eighths, made good openings for their supports. Tittleton paved tho way for the first try with a strong straight dash in which he broke past three opponents. Although suffering from the effects of influenza. Gregory played well up to the time of his retirement about halfway through the second spell. Scott gave .1 much better all-round display than on the previous Saturday, when he was nursing an injured finger in which three stitches had been inserted. His accurate line-kicking was one of the features of Saturday's match. Following were the results.—M.T.P.. 10 (tries by Anderson. W. Tittleton. WoUsbauer ami Simpson, two converted by Scott). Technical Old Boys, 8 (tries by Woolford and Brown. McLean converting one 1: C.R.0.. ft (tries bv Cadman and Faire). Grafton-Pon-sonby, (i (trv bv Elliott and penalty goal by Mile's); A.S.C.. 11. THE ASSOCIATION GAME Falcon Cup and championship were combined in the two games played at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon, and, with the ground in excellent order, fast and thrilling contests were witnessed. The main attraction between Comrades and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A produced probably the best club game seen this season. Comrades fielded five fourth grade boys who with speedy interception and fast following tip never let their opponents settle down. Old Boys had the advantage of the odd goal in five at the interval. Comrades equalised, and the end of the 90 minutes of championship play ended with a division of the points. Extra time of half an hour was required to decide the Falcon Cup competition and the first spell resulted in no score. The Old Boys team was unfortunate that Clark had to leave for duty, and, although the 10 men battled valiantly, Comrades notched the deciding goal to enter the semi-final of the cup The scores and scorers were:—Falcon Cup: Comrades, 5 (Fleet, Walters, Henshaw, Boyd, McGee), Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, 4 (Clark 2, Sime 2); Eastern Suburbs, 4 (R. Welch -J, Collings, Ritchie), Naval Base, 1 (Shoebridge). Championship: Comrades, 4 (Fleet. Walters, Boyd, Henshaw), Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys A. 4 (Clark 2, Sirne 2); Eastern Suburbs. 4 (R. HOCKEY SEASON

Representative Match. —At Sarawia Reserve on Saturday the Auckland hockey representatives defeated the Tank Brigade team by 4 goals to 0. The Auckland score would certainly have been higher had it not been for the outstanding defenco of the Tank goalkeeper, H. C. Whitenian, who on several occasions averted what appeared to be certain goals. Owing to heavy rain during the week the ground was very soft and in the centre rapidly deteriorated into sticky mud. For this reason short passing was impossible and combined movements almost so. Three of Auckland's goals, consequently, resulted from fast breakaways. Scorers for Auckland were J. Horspool (2), N. Wyatt and W. H. Cooper.
