AMERICAN MANPOWER
ENLISTMENT PROGRAMME (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 28 The Washington correspondent of the Wall Street Journal says the projected Army and Navy combat strength for 1944 exceeds the estimated number of men between 18 and 45 who are physically fit to fight. Hence the decision of the Secretary of War, Mr. Henry Stimson, to enlist older men. The proposed Army and Navy strength, necessarily a secret, has been boosted higher than any figure yet published. The United States replaces Russia as the anti-Axis recruiting station. Job and dependency deferments will disappear. By 1944 fitness will be almost only the test. The order of calling up is: First, the remaining single men; second, married men with no children; third, married men with one child. In each group the war workers will be called up last. FOOTBALLER HURT Concussion was suffered by Colin Campbell, aged 17, of 74 Mackelvie Street, Grey Lynn, when he was playing Rugby League football at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital, his condition yesterday being described as fair.
