THE LEAGUE CODE
VICTORY TROPIIY WON MANUKAU TEAM'S SUCCESS A large crowd assembled at Carlaw Park on Saturday to witness the meeting of Manukau and Ponsonb.v in the Auckland Rugby League's victory trophy final. For 00 minutes the score was equal, two points each. In the last quarter of an hour, however, Manukau outplayed the opposition and scored '2(5 points during that time. The Ponsonby forwards included P. Mclvenzio (Wellington) and Iv. Ward (Hawke's Bay), both former Rugby players. The speed and splendid handling of both backs and forwards stamped Manukau as a brilliant combination which compares favourably with the best seen at Carlaw Park since it was opened in 1921. Ponsonby fielded a very heavy pack, but the big men tired once tho game was played on unorthodox movements. Tho Ponsonby backs got numerous opportunities in the first spell, and occasionally in the second, but there was a lack of finish to each attack. For most of the game the team played P. McKenzie, a forward, as an extra back, this being bad judgment. The first spell was marred by overkeenness on the part of the forwards and by the too frequent stopping of the game for minor breaches. Martin, fullback f.or Manukau, gave a clever display and started passing bouts from all positions. The five-eighths, Murray and Henii were the pivot of the attack, while Inglis, a newcomer, on the wing, made a good impression. Thompson and Te Tai were outstanding among the forwards, and Eirinui | and Watene did splendid work in the loose. Tho latter was inclined to unnecessarily uso his strength. Results were:—Manukau, '2B (tries by Murray, 2. Thompson, 2. Hemi and Te Tai, Chase converting four and Watene kicking a penalty goal), Ponsonby., 2 (penalty goal by Kay). Newton-Mount Albert, 8 (tries by Clements and McKay, Cranch converting one), Richmond, 2 (penalty goal by Magill). CityOtahuhu 33 (tries by Hughes, 2. M. Johnson. E. Donovan. Gould. Simons. Hutchinson, Mataira and A. Donovan, the last-named converting three), Marist-North Shore, 5 (try by Graham, converted by Simons).
