LEAGUE FOOTBALL

SENIOR COMPETITION PONSONBY TEAM'S SUCCESS The senior grade competition of the Auckland Rugby League was advanced another stage on Saturday afternoon, when Ponsonby narrowly defeated Marist-North Shore in the principal game. With the club championship already won by Manukau, interest is confined to the special victory trophy for which Ponsonby and Manukau are equal. Neither team has been beaten and will decide the issue noxt Saturday. In the curtain-raiser, Manukau comfortably defeated Newton-Mount Albert, while on No. 2 ground City-Otahuhu put up a good performance to beat Richmond. Many followers of the code expected Ponsonby to have an easy victory over Marist--\orth Shore, but the latter put up strong opposition and was only beaten in the last few minutes. The Ponsonby backs got vory little of the ball from set scrums, but led by five points to nil at half-time. Splendid defence checked each attack the Ponsonby backs made. There was a lot of mishandling on both sides and some of the Ponsonby backs were disappointing. The forwards were well matched, particularly in the loose, where the Ponsonby set were better at passing. Williams, behind the Ponsonby scruin, was the outstanding back, his anticipation being splendid. Nurse, at centre, was in good form, and Jordan did a lot of useful work at fiveeighths. Kay was not seen at his best, although he was responsible for a fine try. Rapana, fullback, is improving each week. Among the forwards Thomas. Heall and Yates were seen to advantage. A feature of the curtain-raiser was the performance of T. Chase, the Manukau captain, who kicked six goals and brought his points total for the season up to 116. Results were:—Ponsonby, 10 (tries by Kay and Jordan, Kay converting two), MaristNorth Shore, 4 (two penalty goals by Simons); City-Otahuhu. 13 (tries by M. Johnson, Hutchinson and Simons, Donovan converting one, and Hutchinson kicking a field goal), Richmond. 6 (tries by Deason and Kinney); Manukau, 27 (tries by Tayor, 2, Te Tai, 2, and Nikaere, Chase converting five and kicking one penalty goal), Newton-Mount Albert, 8 (try by Cranch. who converted and also kicked a penalty goal).
