RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOE COMPETITION INTERESTING DRAWN GAME The Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition was continued at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon in fine weather and in the presence of a good attendance of spectators. The principal attraction on the oval was the meeting of one of the leading teams, M.T.P. and C.R.0., and a fast and interesting match resulted in a draw, each side scoring 12 points. In obtaining four tries to the opposition's one, M.T.P. was unlucky not to register a win. The game was notable for one long succession of penalties, nearly all awarded against M.T.P. for various breaches. From three of these in the first spell goals were kicked, and C.R.O. led at half-time by 12 points to 3. M.T.P. played through the second spell like a team determined to win in face of adversity. Although the penalties were imposed as persistently as in the first spell, and likely-look-ing rushes were checked and valuable ground lost, the side never let up. It was obvious that the penalties were irritating the players and, after the referee had made two men shake hands, he ordered off Peterson, an M.T.P. forward, following a line-out. The offence he committed was not apparent from tie grandstand. M.T.P. should have won the game on placekicks alone, and the captain erred in not giving Scott more chances. The two shows he had were both excellent ones, whereas Anderson was too deliberate, and allowed a "sitter' to be charged down. W. Tittleton and Gregory played fine games for M.T.P. The former made two splendid openings, one resulting in a try, while the other may have ended likewise had Gregory not been flagrantly obstructed—an offence which was not detected. The speedy C.R.O. threequarter line was well marked, except when Boggs ran round Scott for a try, the latter standing too Halfooted well infield. The C.R.O. forwards excelled in the loose. Hadley, Wolfsbauer and Mitchell were always prominent in the M.T.P. pack. ~.r.-r. in Following were the results:—M.T.l.. 12 (tries by Gregory 2, Mitchell and Briggs), C.R.0., 12 (try by Boggs and three penalty goals by Feaver); Garrison, 1(5 (tries by Sidford 2.' and Weston. OTAGO BEATS SOUTHLAND (P a ) DUNEDIN, Sunday in a return Rugby match between Otago and Southland, played at Carishrook on Saturday before a crowd of over 6000, Otago beat Southland by 7 points to 6. ASSOCIATION GAMES Play in the Auckland Football Association senior' championship on Saturday afternoon was again of a high standard, the excellent condition of Blandford Park materially assisting the players to provide scientific football. In the main game between Comrades and Naval Base, the former team, with speedy interception against the scientific play of the sailors, was a goal ahead at half-time. The second spell produced some of the most thrilling football seen at the park, and the experience of the sailors was sufficient to offset the dashing play of Comrades and enable Naval Base to take the full points. Following were the scores and scorers:— Naval Base. 4 (Pawson 2, McCarthy and a defender), Comrades. 3 (Fleet 2, Henshaw); Metro-College, 1 (Hope Ede), C.R.0.. 1 (Ludgate); Eastern Suburbs, 3 (L. Welch, Archer, Walsham). North Shore. 1 (Richards).
