THE LEAGUE CODE

SENIOR COMPETITION MANUKAU INCREASES LEAD Manukau, the leading team in the Auckland Rugby League's senior competition, gained a firmer grip on the championship by defeating City-Otahuliu in the last few minutes of a fine exhibition at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. Citv-Otahuhu led throughout, but with Ave minutes to go a rather lucky interception gave Manukau victory. There was a good attendance. A shower of rain early made the ground slippery. Manukau is now four points ahead of City-Otahuhu on the championship ladder. The Mount Albert team wore armbands as a mark of respect to Sergeant-Pilot M. V. Cato, who was killed in an air accident overseas. Every attempt the Manukau backs made to open up the play was met with hard, low tackling by the City-Otahuhu backs, and the latter side led at half-time by 6 points to 4. Great goal-kicking by Chase actually decided the issue, as he sent over five goals. CityOtahuhu was without the services of the Johnson brothers and Mataira. The referee. Mr. J. Donovan, handled the game firmly and was justly severe on illegal tripping. Chase played a fine game for the winners, and brought his total points up to 102 for the season. Bteini was always a thorn in the side , ?. opposition, and Murray also played splendidly. Butler did a lot of useful work on the wing. Both Watene and Sbilton played at centre-threequarter, and changed places in the forwards. Te Tai, Ririnui and Thompson were outstanding among the forwards. For the losers, HaJsey, wing, Hutchinson and Donovan were prominent, both on attack and defence. Finlayson hooked well. Results were-—Manukau. 13 (try by Shilton, converted by Chase, who also kicked four, penalty goals), City-Otahuhu, 9 (try by Johnson and three penalty goals by A. Donovan); Ponsonby, 13 (tries by Williams, Nurse and Jordon, Kay converting one and kicking a penalty goal), Mount Albert-Newton, 4 (two penalty goals by Cranch); Marist-Norih Shore, 03 (tries by Rutherford, Chatham, White, Hunt and Meredith, the last-named converting two and kicking two penalty goals), Richmond, 11 (tries by Deason, Kinney and McDonald. Williams converting one). HOCKEY SEASON A good standard of play was seen in the third series of matches in the second round of the senior hockey championship, played at Sarawia Reserve and Fowlds Park on Saturday. Sound play by St. Luke's halves held Somerville to a four-goal draw, while Gram mar Old Boys' forwards outplayed Mount Eden's defence.
