Luke, formerly Gov. ernor of Fiji, visited Ohinemutu during the week-end, the Arawa people, in requesting that Sir Harry convey to His Majesty the King their deep affeotion and unswerving loyalty to the Throne, also asked him to assure His Majesty that they would keep the ranks of the Maori Battalion until ultimate victory had been achieved. Sir Harry said he would be honoured' to convey these messsages to His Majesty. While at the pa, Sir Harry paid his respects to those members of the Maori Battalion who had lost their lives during the war and also paid a tribute to the gallantry and daring of members of the Maori Battalion in the field of battle.

OBITUARY

MONSIGNOR T. LANE The death occurred yesterday morn, ing of the Very Rev. Monsignor Thomas Lane, priest of the Tmmaculate Conception parish, EHerslie. He entered a private hospital on Thursday to undergo an operation. Monsignor Lane was born in 1871 at Mitfchelstown, Cork, Ireland, and studied at Mount Melleray, St. Sidpice, Paris, and All Hallows, Dublin, In 1896 he was ordained for the diocese of Brisbane by Archbishop Walsh. For health reasons he came to New Zea. land, arriving at Auckland in 1902, and he was appointed curate at Onehunga the same year. The following year he was appointed pastor of the newly, formed parish of Ormond. In 1906 he was transferred to Gisborne, where ha served until 1925, when he was ap. pointed to EHerslie, at the same time being made dean of the district of Ohinemuri. Two years later he was appointed a domestic prelate.

MILITARY WEDDING The wedding took place at St. Andrew's Church, Lower Symonds Street, on Saturday afternoon of Miss Betty King Gray, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gray, Fairview Road, Mount Eden, and Lieutenant Harold William Rerell. second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Revell, Station Road, Papatoetoe. The Rev, R. Ferguson Fish officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a -beautiful gown of ivory embossed satin, fashioned with a V-neckline and a trained skirt with fullness accentuated at the back to form a slight bustle effect. Her lace-: edged tulle veil was held with a top-! knot of white azaleas, and she carried a sheaf of similar flowers. The bridesmaid, Miss Gloria Jackson, vrore a pit ture frock of pervenche blue organdio with a topknot of cherry flowers to match her posy. Lieutenant D. Beresford was best man. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents.

HARD OF HEARING LEAGUE

The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the League for the Hard of Hearing took place last week in the league rooms, Myers Kindergarten. Miss B. Carnachan presided. Regret was expressed that an early member bf the ; committee. Mrs. C. B. Plummer, had been obliged to resign because of illhealth. After the business was concluded » short programme was presented, members who were hard of hearing being , enabled to listen with the help of the group-Hearing aid. CARE OF WAR BLIND

A cablegram from Sir Clutha Mackenzie stating that he had recently flown from New York to Karachi, India, where he is to inaugurate a centre for the treatment of war blinded, was received on Saturday by Lady Mackenzie, of Manurewa. Sir Clutha has been working for the past 18 month* with the British War Belief Society in New York. > At the beginning of the present war, Sir Clutha, who was spending » holiday in India, extended his stay for several months at the request of Sir lan Fraser, chairman, of St. Dunstans Hostel for Blinded Sailors, Soldiers ana Airmen. He was advised that St. Dunstan's had been given a task sinl> lar to that for which it was founded during the Great War, namely th* hospital treatment, training and_ afteiv caro of men losing their sight in the present war. Sir Clutha, who tra* blinded early in the last war, _ COT-.. ducted an appeal throughout India Oil behalf of the new work undertaken by St. Dunstan's.
