RUGBY FOOTBALL

BEPRESENTATTVE GAME

AUCKLAND BEATS WAIKATO (0 - c -> HAMILTON, Sunday The Auckland Rugby team had no difficulty in defeating Waikato in a representative match at Rugby Park yesterday, the fixture ending 26-8 in the visitors' favour. The weather was fino and there was a good attendanco. The game was open and fast, but Auckland proved superior in both departments. Tctzlaff, Schubert, Hilton and Pearcc were exceptionally prominent among the visitors, while Potier, Warrendcr, Pritchard, and Flannagan were conspicuous Waikato players. Waikato, playing against the wind, opened the score account when Iligginson kicked a penalty goal. Butler completed an Auckland dribbling movement with a try which Kingstone converted. lie also added another three points with a penalty goal. Auckland attacked strongly and Faire passed to Schubert, who scored between the posts. Kingstone failed to convert. Rue penetrated and scored. Tctzlaff, Rao and Butler figured in a passing bout which ended in Butler scoring, and half-time was called with the score: Auckland 17, Waikato 3. On resumption Auckland again assumed the initiative, and Tctzlaff completed a loose rush with a try. Auckland was frequently penalised at this stage, for infringements, but no proals resulted. Waikato attacked with a vigorous forward rush, which ended in Warrender crossing the line. Higginson converted. Auckland gave Waikato several more chances with breaches, hut the efforts by the goal-kickers were fruitless. Auckland made a strong rush and Pearcc scored. Butler and Faire figured in a race for the coal-line, and Faire crossed. The game ended: Auckland, Waikato, s, Mr. A. A. Griffiths. Hamilton, .was referee. SENIOR COMPETITION MANUKAU DEFEATS M.T.P. The feature of Saturday's matches in the second round of the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition was the defeat of the lead-' ing team, M.T.P., by Manukau. The latter had accounted for Garrison the previous week. Its success on Saturday was all the more meritorious on account of the fact that its captain and star forward. W. Smith, was absent with the representative team at Hamilton. When M.T.P. held a lead of 11—3 at haif-time, the side appeared set for a win, but once against the Manukau forwards got busy after a penalty goal had increased their total. They bustled the opposing backs, W. 'L'ittieton being the only one capable of successfully stopping the loose rushes. He was the outstanding back on the field. When two points in arrears Manukau went into the lead by means of a potted goal by Young and a penalty goal by Boryer. There were some hectic exchanges among the forwards in the later stages and. when blows were freely exchanged, the referee, who was too slow in blowing his whistle for breaking up rucks, ordered off a forward from each side. This match was played on No. 2 ground and it attracted more attention in the second spell than the main game on the oval, where C.R.O. heat Ranfurlys by two unconverted tries to nil. There were some hard and willing exchanges in this contest, which was played at a particularly fast pace. No scoring had been done up to half-time. The backs of both teams played with poor combination, the inside men' indulging in too much kicking, thereby giving away possession of the ball which the forwards had worked so hard to obtain. Following were the results:—C.R.O., 6 (tries hv Carew and Laurent), Ranfurlys, 0; Manukau. 19 (try by Cameron, converted by Boryer, who also kicked four penalty goals, and potted goal by Young), M.T.P.. 14 (tries by Gregory and Kendall, one converted by Anderson, who also kicked two penalty goals); Garrison, 8 (try by Collins, converted by Aitken, who also kicked a penalty goal), A.S.C., G (two tries by Day): Air Force No. 2, 18. Technical Old Boys, 3. Secondary Schools. —Auckland Grammar, •>"> Sacred Heart. 0; Takapuna Grammar. 10, King's College. 0. Playing at Hamilton, Mount Albert Grammar beat Hamilton High School by 12 points to (>. THE LEAGUE CODE EVENLY CONTESTED GAMES Closely-contested games were a feature of the opening series in the third round of the Auckland Rugby League's senior grade competition. The grounds at Carlaw Park were heavy after rain, and the attendance was fair. The principal match, between Ponsonby and Richmond, provided spectators with a good exhibition of the code, Ponsonby winning with a very exciting last-minute dash. Both teams fielded a number of servicemen on leave from overseas. After leading by three points to nil at half-time. Richmond looked like holding Ponsonby. which was responsible for beating Manukau the previous week. Sound tackling kept the clever Ponsonby backs subdued, and it was only in the last 10 minutes that superior teamwork prevailed. The Richmond backs can be credited with good defensive tactics, and consistent covering up checked many promising movements. Richmond maintained the lead throughout TO minutes of play. The winning try came from fast chain passing by the backs, and Kay and Morgan changed direction to give Jordan a clear run hetween the posts. The Richmond forwards were strengthened by the inclusion of M. W. Devine, who played a fine game. The outstanding Ponsonby backs were Kay and Nurse, while Marsh, Morgan and Herkt were prominent among the forwards. Kinney. McGregor and Davies played well among the Richmond backs and Davis and Crookall were a tower of strength in the forwards. Results were:—Ponsonby. 7 (try by .Tordan. converted by Kay, who also kicked a penalty goal). Richmond, fi (tries by Kinney and Magill): City-Otahuhu. 18 (tries by Simons. 2. Donovan and Gordon, Donovon converting three). Newton-Mount Albert. 10 (tries by Moore and Pone, Niwa converting one and kicking a penalty goal); Manukau, 15 (tries by Murray, 2, and Taylor.
