RUGBY FOOTBALL

LEADING TEAMS MEET M.T.P. BEATS AIR FORC.E By defeating Air Force No. 2 in thc„j/main match of the Auckland Rugby competition on Saturday afternoon, the M.T.P. team gained the lead. Prior to this !?ame, the two teams were level. The match, v. nich was played in fine weather and 011 a Hard ground, was witnessed by a good attendance of spectators.

M.T.P. scored three tries, two converted, to an unconverted try. It led B—o at half-time. Ihe win was well deserved. The M.T.P. forwards played their best Rugby to date, having now acquired a better knowledge of the rules, more particularly that relating to offside. A good scrum was packed and the hooker, Ellis, w_as able to obtain possession in the majority of the set scrums. The winning team's back's should have done better with the amount of ball they received, but W. Tittleton, first fiveeighths, and Gregory, centre, frequently held on too long, ltiley, second five-eighths, was the best back, while Scott, at fullback, was verv safe.

\\ hile its forwards played well, the work of the Air Force backs lacked finish. The pack included Synics, hooker last year for .Faranaki, and R. Brownlie, a half-brother to the well-known Hawke's Bay All Blacks. Morgan was outstanding In the forwards. \\ ard, fullback, had given an excellent display np to the time he left the field with a head injury. Following were the results:—M.T.P., 13 (tries by Petersen, Gregory and Riley. Scott and Anderson eadi converting one), Air Force No. 2. 3 (try by Morgan); C.R.0., 17 (tries by Faire (3),.Mi11s and Hoggs. THE LEAGUE CODE MANUKAU RETAINS LEAD Conditions were ideal at Carl aw Park on Saturday, when the Auckland Rugby .League continued its senior grade competition. There was a large attendance. The main game, between City-Otahuhu and Ponsonhy, was very one-sided, and resulted in an overwhelming win for the former. The curtain-raiser, however, between Richmond and Manukau, was a fine display, and the latter gained a lucky win shortly before time. Manukau still leads in the competition from City-Otahuhu. With the exception of a few minutes in the first spell, Ponsonhy was outclassed by City-Otahuhu. The latter gave one of its best displays, and most- of the tries came from really good team work. A feature of the game was the good play of A. Donovan, at fiveeighths, who scored three tries, and kicked seven goals, a total of '23 points. In ba-cks and forwards, the combined team showed definite superiority. The result, was never in doubt, and interest lagged after half-time, when CityOtahuhu led by 1G points to 3.

Results were:—City-Otahuhu, 44 (tries by Donovan (3), Halsey (3), N. Johnson, Simons, Finlayson and Legge, Donovan converting seven), Ponsonhy, 3 (try by Williams); Manukau, 11 (tries by Thompson (2) and Butler, Chase converting one), Richmond, 10 (tries by Davis and .McDonald, L.
