SENIOE COMPETITION FOURTH SERIES DECIDED The fourth series of matches in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition was played on Saturday in fine weather and with the grounds in good order. There was a fair , attendance at Eden Park, where the main attraction was the meeting of two military teams, C.R.O. and A.S.C. A very keenly-con-tested match resulted in a win for the former by 15 points to 11. A secondary schools' game . was the curtain-raiser in which Auckland , Grammar School overwhelmed Takapuna Grammar. There were some spectacular incidents in the senior fixture. One was Payne's potted goal for C.R.0., while a brilliant run by Fa ire. centre for this team, led to a try. Even more spectacular was Rae's try for A.S.C. in the second spell He received the ball just iuside half-way and, with a dodgy , run, went through the whole of the opposing side to score near the posts. it was anyone's game and A.S.C. was a little unlucky. C.R.O. lasted better and was ( attacking strongly in the closing stages. Fa ire, Boggs and Feaver (fullback in "the hrst spell and first, five-eighths in the second) ; were the outstanding backs in the winning team, while Powell, Cleary and Mills were 1 prominent forwards. Pearman and Rae were ; the pick of the A.S.C. backs, and the fori wards were a fairly even lot. 1 M.T.P., one of the leading teams, was successful against Technical Old Boys on No. 2 ground. WELLINGTON, Sunday The New Zealand Rushy Council yesterday elected Mr. E. MrKenzie. of Wairarapa, a life member of the New Zealand Rugby Union . in recognition of his services to the game. The council set aside €750 fsr a school of football. ; The position of Rugby League players in the services who desire to play Rugby' Union football durinsr the war was clarified, it being decided to allow them (o play with and ' against Rugby Union teams provided that, once they have elected to play Rugby, they , must continue to play under tho jurisdiction of the New Zealand Union. The status of Rugby players who play with League players under the terms of the decision will not be affected. After the war such League players, if they wish to continue playing Rugby, must apply for reinstatement. THE LEAGUE CODE HIGH SCORING CONTEST The senior grade competition of the Auckland Rugby League was continued at Carlaw Park on Saturday under good conditions. The principal game, between Richmond and Mount Albert-Newton, was one of high scoring, and the fortunes fluctuated throughout the second half. It was full of interest, with New-ton-Mount Albert more constructive in its play. Superior toam work enabled Manukau to defeat Ponsonb.v comfortably, while CityOtahuhu, the leading team, was pressed all the way to win narrowly from North Shore- , Marist. Some leading players were absent from Hie City-Otahuhu side. Superior individual play by Mount AlbertNewton was the deciding factor in its game with Richmond which, however, deserved its lead at half-time by S points to ."> In the second half Newton-Mount Albert -rave an improved display and brilliant play by Xiwa, ably supported by Silva, changed the team's fortunes. Besides scoring two tries, Xiwa kicked four goals from wide angles. Behind the scrum Clements grave good service, and both Moore and Cranch shared in the success. Good hooking by Quirke was an advantage. and List. Ginders and Thomasson were prominent forwards. Among the Richmond backs, Williams, at half, and Webb, fiveeighths played well and Kinney, on the wing, showed dash. ASSOCIATION GAME The main attraction in Soccer football at Blandford P-<rk on Saturday, the challenge match between Air Force and Naval Base for the Leo Munro Services' Challenge Cup, provided a llirillintr contest in which Air Forco retained the trophy by the odd goal in five. Air F.>rce plaved bettter football. Lattimer and Peebles, at fullback, consistently repelling naval attacks for Everson, in the pivot position, to cleverly distribute the ball among his forwards, where Williams. Patterson, Hopkinson and W,iters were a strong attacking force. Batty bronchi off several good saves in the Navy goal, but Lund, centre-half, was the hardest worKer both on defence and attack and with Hennessy and Beasy provided many openings Scott, on the left, showed out in clever work on the wing. REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY The first representative hockey match of the season was played at Ilobson Park lastSaturday, when the Auckland team defeated the Tank Brigade representatives by 2 goals to 0. Auckland was first to settle down and within 10 minutes of commencement of play G Davies accepted a pass to score with a hard shot. Not long afterwards W. H.
