RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR COMPETITION

THREE TEAMS UNDEFEATED j For the third week in succession the main | match at Eden Park in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior competition wa6 won on Satar- I day by the margin of a s'.ngle point.. M.T.P. 1 defeating Manukau by 14 points to 13. | M.T.P., Air Force No. 2 and A.3.C. are the only three teams which have so far not auf. fered defeat, but the last-named has p!a,v«d one game fewer than its rivals. Apart from a shower the weather was fine, with a cold wind blowing down the 0.-g; at Eden Park, where there was only a moder j ate attendance. Manukau had the advantage of the wJmd in the first spell and le»j ] by 7 points to 3. The second spell was just as keenly contested and, with the closeness of the scores, the interest of the spectators was maintained until the final whistle. The Manukau forwards excelled in the loose and invariably gained a lot of ground through the unwillingness of the defenders to go down on the ball and thereby stop the rushes. The M.T.P. backs, however, were the better combination, while their in. ! dividual ability was also a factor in th» success of the side. On the run of the play in the second spell, M.T.P. should have won by a larger marjrin. Gregory, Riley and the Tittleton brothers were the best harks on the winning side. j Gregory, however, spoilt several good chances I by holding on too long after he had beaten one or more men. Showing much dash ii the loose, the M.T.P. forwards supported \ their backs well. Smith led the Manukau forwards in fine style and Moyle played a ; solid game at halfback. A secondary schools' curtain-raiser between f Sacred Heart College and Hamilton High School was won by the former by 12 points to 6. Following were the results:—M.T.P., 14 (tries by Anderson 2, Gregory and Riley. Anderson converting one), Manukau, 13 (tries by Smith 2 arid Dunn, and a field goal, by Boryer); Air Force No. 2, 21 (tries by Vause 2, Hewitt, Houton and Wilson, Hewitt converting three), Training College, 14 (tries by Rasmussen and Dickey, Gardiner converting one and Lawrence kicking two penalty goals); A.S.C., 6 (tries by Cameron and Day), Technical Old Boys, 5 (try by V*oo!ford, converted by Delgrosso); C.R.0., 10, Garrison, 8. Second division: Ranfurlys, 21, Grammar' University 6. PLAY IN THE COUNTRY Pukekohe.—A Rugby match at Pukekohe on Saturday resulted:—Southern (Ith) L.A.F.V., 11, Northern (3rd) L.A.F.V., THE LEAGUE CODE CITY-OTA HU H U IN LEAD City-Otahuhu retained its leading position in the Auckland Rugby League championship by easily beating Richmond in the principal game at Carls w Park on Saturday. There was a fair attendance. Constructive olay by both backs and forwards was a feature of City-Otahuhu's victory, and the winning team I gave a high-class display. Richmond was 1 severely penalised when Broadhead was I ordered off a few minutes after the start. I The score favoured City-Otahuhu by h | points to 4 at half-time. Six tries, the result lof good handling and effective support by | the forwards, were gained by the combined | team in the second spell. Hughes, who has j played in the forwards for some years, gave j a creditable display at fullback for the win- ! ning team. His defence was excellent. Do noj van was the most constructive back on the | ground, and Hutchinson, at half, gave splenj did service. Both Halsey, on the wing, anJ - I McManus, centre threequarter, played a 1 prominent part in the victory. Few players j of recent years have 'impressed more than N. and J. Johnson, of the Otahuhu clnb. | Both are fine types of league forwards. H. | Mataira and Findlater gave excellent service j and Finlayson hooked with success. | Following were the results:—City-Otahuhu, 25 (tries by R. Halsey 2, Simons 2, Find- | later, J. Johnson and N. Johnson, Donovan j and Mnllins converting one each). Richmond, 1 4 (two penalty goals by Webb); Manukau, 10 I (tries by Toi and Butler, Chase kicking two j penalty goals), Mount Albert-Newton, 5 (try j by Cranch, who also kicked a penalty goal)*; | Marist-North Shore, 7 (try by McWiliiams i and two penalty goals by Wiberg), Ponsonby, ! 2 (Morrell a penalty goal). THE SOCCER GAME Patrons of Blandford Park were treated to a spectacular match on Saturday, when First Tank Brigade and Air Force staged a thrilling draw in the main attraction, and the half-time score of 2-2 was a good indication of the play. Tank Brigade had a strong front line, but the play of D. Lattimer. left back for Air Force, was outstanding, he and R. Everson. in the pivot position, breaking up many dangerous attacks. 3. Lyons, the well-known Northcote goalkeeper of several seasons ago. played an attractive game in Tank Brigade's goal and repulsed attacks with clever anticipation and sound clearances Following were the results:—First Tan't Brigade, 4 (Brackenridge. Hutchinson, Maclean and a defender), Air Force, 4 <Hopkinson 2, Philips, Patterson); Eastern Suburbs, 4 (Welch 2, Collings, Espie). Mount Albert Grammar Old Beys B, 4 (Rollings 2. J.
