DELIVERY OF MILK

With the question of milk delivery as far in the forefront as it has been recently in Auckland, the example of Australia in instituting daylight hours and proposing to employ women was bound to be quoted to the council and its adoption here to be urged. In asking that it should be considered, Mr. Lovegrove coupled front gate delivery with it, and said the sacrifice involved was one the people should be prepared to face. It is true that, if the war brought no worse hardships than these two changes in accepted routine, the public would have little reason to complain. It is very desirable to have the milk left at the back door, waiting when the household wakes in the morning, but life would still go on if both time and place of delivery were altered. It would mean the loss of a convenience to which everyone has long been accustomed, but basically very littjle more. Unfortunately, as with so many of these new conditions being created by the war, the inconvenience would fall principally on

the housewife. Most people, however, would accept the changes philosophically enough if assured oi. two things—that there would be real and effective release of manpower for more essential service,, and that the purity and quality oi the milk would not be lowered by the altered delivery time. The first is the essence of the whole question, the justification for asking the public to accept inconvenience. The second is important, because it bears on the health of the family. The community is entitled to substantial guarantees on both points.
