TOBACCO RUSH ENDS

PRICES RISE ON MONDAY THE SHORTAGE OF MATCHES There was a marked difference in the volume of trading in tobacco stocks in Auckland yesterday, which, although a busy day for retailers, was not abnormally so. This morning smokers will have their last opportunity of buying tobacco at the cheaper rate. From Monday next, all stocks will be chargeable at the new prices. There was no indication anywhere yesterday that the match famine would soon be relieved. It was reported at one warehouse that match folders, which formerly were distributed free as advertising media, are on sale in small quantities in a few shops. For the fortunate few who still possess petrol lighters in working order, there are stores supplying free spirit from counter reservoirs.
