SOLDIER'S RELEASE

NEEDED IN PUBLIC SERVICE The case of a man who had been in camp for over three months becoming essential to a civilian occupation through his senior officers dying or reaching retirement age came before the Auckland Area Manpower Committee yesterday, when the Director of National Service applied for the release from military duty of Thomas Cecil Bowker, former senior clerk ia the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Auckland. The reservist was mobilised with the National Military Reserve in January. •"When this man went into camp the position was such that the office could stand his departure," said- the Crown representative, Mr. L. N. Harris. 'jSince then his withdrawal from camp has become necessary because the deputy registrar-general and the registrar in Christchurch have died. In addition, another senior officer in the department is due to retire on account of his age. These circumstances have made Mr. Bowker, who has had 26 years' service, the third senior officer in the department for the whole of New Zealand." The committee ordered the reservist's release from camp and instructed him to join the Home Guard.
