RATION BOOKS ISSUE

CENTRAL POSTAL AREA PUBLIC NOT HURRYING In reviewing the results of the first three days on which ration books have been available, it cannot be said that the people of Auckland regard this duty as one of urgency. Wet weather on Tuesday and yesterday did not encourage householders to venture abroad but a warning was issued last evening that the preliminary period for obtaining coupons could not be prolonged indefinitely. About 25,000 ration books have been issued at the central bureau, which is the Town Hall concert chamber, and as the estimated population of the central postal district is 205,000, it would appear that only one person in eight has received his book in this area. However, the ..suburban post offices have done much larger business on the basis of the populations of the. boroughs they serve, and although the estimated figures vary a good deal, it is a fair assumption that 30 per cent of suburban householders have found time to complete their applications, and over the area of Greater Auckland, about 25 per cent. The issuing staff at the central bureau has been increased to 23, and about 40 are employed on all duties. They are drawn from many departments and some of the work of those offices is in abeyance while members of the staffs are assigned to this special duty.

It was stated yesterday in answer to inquiries that parents of children attending boarding school must secure the ration books and send them to the school. Pensioners and others who are exempt from social security tax may secure coupons on presentation of documentary evidence of their status.
