To Ripen Pears
OBTAIN a well-made wooden box and a quantity of hay. Place a layer of hay at the bottom and arrange on this some of the pears so that they do not touch one another. Cover these with hay and put in another lay of fruit. This is repeated until the box is full. Finish with a good layer of hay and on this rest a board which has some heavy weights upon it. In a week or a little more examine the pears. In many cases it will be found that these are in perfect condition for eating. By this means it is easy to lengthen the season when the pears are fit to eat and so avoid a glut at any time.
