MAN'S MILKING ABILITY

How many cows can one man milk? This question exercised the minds of the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Christchurch during the hearing of an appeal on behalf of a farmer. The witness said that the farmer concerned had 56 cows and for the milking had the assistance of his brother. He contended that milking 56 cows was definitely a two-man job. Mr. G. M. Hall, a member of the board, said that he knew of a man who was milking 80 cows by himself. These cows were machine-milked. Mr. Hall also said that he knew of two boys who could milk 50 pedigree Friesian cows and wash up within an hour. The cows, he said, were valued at something like £2OO a head. The witness said that a great deal depended on the class of machines used but still contended that the milking or 56 cows was a two-man t'ob.
