FARMING COMPULSION

CRITICISM OF PROPOSAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday "It is to bo regretted that the Labour Party has resolved that 'compulsion should be applied, if necessary, to ensure that the agricultural output meets the needs of the Dominion and our Allies'," said the Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr. A. P. O'Shea, to-day. "Coming, at a time when the farmers of the Dominion have done a wonderful job and when the Prime Minister is appealing for unity, the resolution can only stir up resentment among a section of the community which has done all that has been asked of it." Mr. O'Shea asked if the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, would indicate the exact directions in which the war effort of New Zealand's farmers had fallen short of his requirements. He was well aware, for example, that many farmers had voluntarily turned over to cheese production at considerable* sacrifice without even a murmur of discontent. It was interesting to compare the behaviour of the farmers with that of some other sections of the community and then consider whether or not compulsion might not be more deserving of application to the sections in question.
