School o'ommittee Elections Nominations for school committees, in the Auckland education district closed last night. Where necessary, the biennial elections of committees will be held at meetings of householders on April 15. Parcein from Motorists Letters of thanks from the civic authorities of Hull, Cardiff, North Shields and Liverpool, for parcels of food forwarded by the motorists of Auckland, were read at a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association last night. It was reported that six parcels had been sent to Dover at Christmas and 33 were being held in reserve by the distributing agent, Sir Stenson Cooke. Remedial Treatment The value of the Army remedial treatment wing is indicated by the fact that at the Narrow Neck military school there are a number of men from it.who are being given a course of training as instructors. The disability of these men has been sufficiently overcome to enable them to be given the training laid down for the prospective instructors' course, even though they may not have the physical capacity for field operations. Obviously they have qualities of another order. Colder Temperatures Following a spell of oppressive, humid weather, temperatures in Auckland dropped sharply yesterday. The fall was accompanied by a change from northerly to southerly winds and a slow falling in the barometric pressure to 29.47 in. at midnight. Conditions in the city were made unpleasant for pedestrians by squalls of rain driven by a strong wind that persisted throughout the day. Late last night the weather was still from the south-west, with a breeze of moderate strength. Recruit to Soldier Can a reasonably efficient soldier be made in one month? At the Narrow Neck military school there is a platoon, formed of average recruits, through which the question is being put to the test. In the training laid down for it much of the ordinary detail is pruned. The men will fire their weapons at an earlier stage than usual, and in other respects they will be pushed forward in a manner foreign to the barrack square methods of earlier days. It is yet too soon to secure a definite judgment on the test, but results to date are encouraging. Scenic Reserves The sum of £25 is to be contributed by the Automobile Association (Auckland) toward the purchase of Smith's Bush at Takapuna, the finance committee of the association having re-ported-to the council last night that the property would be of great benefit to motorists in the future. The Main Highways Board advised that it was in full accord with the association's suggestion that suitable areas on the Taupo-Napier highway should be reserved for their scenic value or as camping sites and that a recommendation bo made to the Government at some more suitable time. The council decided not to contribute to the cost of a proposed new road between Howick and Cockle Bay. dun Practice Held Gun practice was held in Auckland yesterday, the danger area being over the Motukareho and Rangitoto channels. The fall of the shells into the sea could be seen clearly from various parts of Auckland, and many people stopped to watch the columns of spray that rose high as each missile landed. Another practice is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. until noon to-day. Residents of the Campbell's Bay area are advised that night manoeuvres will bo held between 7.30 and 10 o'clock to-morrow, and that gunfire will be heard. During the period the East Coast Bay road between Aberdeen Road and Kowhai Road will be closed to traffic, and the Takapuna-Silverdale highway will be closed from 7.55 p.m. to 8.25 p.m.
